Those Time Magazine Pokemon covers are dominating our list of the top magazines in the collecting hobby. The Hottest Magazines is a curated list of the magazines moving up the eBay sales lists. GoCollect pulls the stats straight from eBay and sorts them by volume moving in the marketplace over the past 30 days.
1. Time Special Edition: Pokemon #nn (Multiple Covers) (+6)
Coming in at #1… and #2… and #3… and three additional slots in the top 20 are the various covers of Time Special Edition: Pokemon. Time Special Edition: Pokemon #nn (Pikachu Cover) takes the first slot in our Hottest Magazines, while the Gengar and Eevee covers take the second and third. The Mew cover is at number eight while Bulbasaur is the number nine hottest magazine, and Charmander is in the 17th spot. The Pikachu cover has seen sales of 39 graded copies since its release earlier this year, and prices have reached as high as $355 for a 9.8. Many of these covers have been on our Hottest Magazines list since their release. If you’re a Pokemon collector, they’re quickly becoming a must-have.
6. Playboy #v25 #10 (+7)
Coming in at number 6 is this issue of Playboy with Dolly Parton gracing the cover. The country music star is also the featured interview in this issue. Published in October 1978, this magazine has seen eight sales in the past month. The top was a 9.2 graded copy – the only copy in the highest grade – going for $1,000 in a fixed price eBay sale on August 21. That’s not a record, however. That belongs to a 9.0 selling for $1,300 in 2023.
20. Beckett Basketball Card Magazine #1 (new to the list)
New to the list and coming in at number 20 is Beckett Basketball Card Magazine #1. This first issue published in 1990 sports a Michael Jordan cover, making it a two-fer for those seeking Jordan covers and those looking for first issues. We’ve seen four sales over the past month-and-a-half with a 9.8 going for $475 in a fixed price eBay sale being of note. That’s the top price ever paid for a graded copy. Also keep an eye on Beckett Hockey Magazine #1 coming in at number 21 on our list and featuring Wayne Gretzky on the cover.
41. Nintendo Power #8 (new to the list)
The September 1989 issue of Nintendo Power features the Duck Tales NES games and the second part of the popular Super Mario Bros. 2 tips. The top sale over the past month was a 9.2 selling for $205 in an August 18 eBay auction. This issue had dropped in value since the lone 9.8 sold for $1,560 a little over a year ago, so it’s nice to see it making a comeback.
43. Time #v158 #12 (new to the list)
In a somber note, this issue of Time, published just three days after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center buildings in New York on September 11, 2001, comes in at number 43 on our Hottest Magazines list. The ranking is based on sales of two of the only three graded copies in existence. A 9.2 sold for a slashed $595 on August 20, while an 8.5 sold for $275 in a September 1 fixed price eBay sale. The top 9.4 graded copy last sold in 2022 for $300.
