Blumhouse Productions has confirmed that, indeed, the Spawn movie reboot is on the way. That will send buyers to their local comic shops for some key issues, and we’re talking more than just Spawn #1.

Jason Blum himself has made it clear that the long-awaited movie is “in very, very active development.” He added that his best guess is that the film could be ready for theaters in 2025, but much of that depends on the current Hollywood writer's strike.

Of course, we’ve been here before. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been teasing us with incessant proclamations that the horror-centric movie is always so close to being made. At one point, the likes of Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner were ready to join the cast. Then it all fell apart.

Having Blum confirm that the movie is in the works gives us hope. Could it be that we will finally get that overdue, R-rated Spawn reboot The Toddfather has been touting for so long? Until the cameras start rolling, we can cross our fingers, but things are looking good. No doubt, that will push Spawn’s key issues up the sales charts.

SPAWN #1

The first order of business is getting your hands on the issue that started the entire Image Comics revolution. In the early 1990s, McFarlane led an all-star lineup of creators who were ready to ditch the corporate worlds of Marvel and D.C.

While the likes of Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee contributed titles, it was McFarlane’s Spawn that stood the test of time. That has made the first issue one of the most popular comics on the secondary market. Now that the movie reboot is in development, it will only add to the excitement to put it in those long boxes.

SPAWN #2

What’s Spawn without his villains? His most famous adversary remains the Violator. Whether in his clown form or as a bug-themed demon, he is one of the most popular characters to come from the Spawn title. It’s hard to imagine a movie reboot without him, and that will make Violator’s first appearance a high priority for speculators and investors.

Good thing collectors were on top of this one decades ago. While you’re at it, you might as well grab Spawn #4 for Violator’s first cover appearance. Better safe than sorry, and the artwork is classic McFarlane.

SPAWN #8

Speaking of Violator, you’ll want to stock up on his brothers’ first appearances. Out of his four siblings, the favorite is typically Vindicator, who is basically Violator on steroids.

Although Vindicator debuted in Spawn #8, which happened to be written by comics legend Alan Moore, the rest of the Phlebiac Brothers didn’t appear until 1994’s Violator #1, also written by Moore.

Since we’ve already seen a Violator on the silver screen in the original movie, wonderfully portrayed by John Leguizamo, it would not be a surprise to see Blumhouse up the ante and bring the entire clan to the reboot.

SPAWN #16

Violator and his brothers would make the best-looking villains for a Spawn horror movie, but there is another classic villain who could be in the running: Redeemer. There have been multiple versions of the character over the years, but the original was Al Simmon’s shadowy old boss, Jason Wynn.

Any adaptation of Al’s origin story would almost certainly include Wynn, and Blumhouse could take him up a notch by having him transition into the magical Redeemer.

SPAWN’S UNIVERSE

Two years ago, McFarlane reintroduced Spawn and many of his variants in a more shared universe approach to the characters than we had seen before. Could it be that idea was in anticipation of a possible movie and television franchise? At one point, there was talk of a Sam and Twitch live-action show, so we know McFarlane is open to the possibility of other Spawn-related projects. That could lead to She-Spawn and Gunslinger Spawn arriving on the screen as well.
