Collectors turned their backs on Jennika and Ms. Marvel this week, as their first appearances led the pack in the dubious Coldest Comics.
What are we talking about? There are best-sellers, and that means there must be the other end of the spectrum. Each week, we spotlight the top-five movers and shakers from the Hottest Comics sales volume index. Where there is hot, there must also be cold, and these are the five issues that fell flat this week.
838. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #95 SECOND PRINT (-795)
What goes up must come down, right? That seems to be the case with the first appearance of Jennika, the fifth Ninja Turtle. Seven days ago, the second print of her debut issue (at least in turtle form) set the collecting world on fire and was one of the hottest comics on the market. This week, it lost all the ground that it had gained, and now it hovers outside the top 800. With all the excitement for TMNT after Last Ronin, I expect this issue to see some fluctuation in the market before the latest Ninja Turtle series wraps up. If she gets mentioned in Last Ronin, then it will shoot back to the top of the rankings.
802. MARVEL POINT ONE (-705)
What happened here? Isn’t this supposed to be one of the best modern investments on the secondary market? That it is, but collectors were having none of it at least for one week.
This issue featured the debut of Kamala Khan, the new Ms. Marvel. Since she has a Disney+ series on the way, there is no doubt that Marvel Point One #1 will see an uptick very soon. This is simply a hiccup on the way to the top.
796. THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #2 (-700)
Gorr the God Butcher is coming to live action, and now there are set photos of a shaved-headed Christian Bale surfacing on the internet. Wouldn’t that translate into a sales increase for Gorr’s first appearance? Not this week, it doesn’t. This could be a byproduct of high prices, as the added attention for Gorr has made this an even more expensive key. Look for it to rebound in short order.
868. FANTASTIC FOUR: ANTITHESIS #2 ROSS TIMELESS VARIANT (-699)
Are there just too many Alex Ross Timeless variants on the market? His covers are usually prime collectibles, and many enthusiasts specifically buy his pieces. Yet here we are again talking about one of his Timeless variants being at the bottom of the Hottest Comics. Some of this could be the fact that nothing has happened with the villain, Antithesis, who made his first full appearance in this issue. If Marvel decides to do more with him, then I expect this Ross variant to get a major boost.
737. GREEN LANTERN #48 (-645)
Kyle Rayner was not feeling the love from collectors this week. His first appearance in GL #48 took a tumble through the rankings, falling by more than 600 spots to land him on the Coldest comics list. If he were set to appear in the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern Corps series, then I would be more surprised by the drop. Since he is not on the live-action radar, it makes sense that collectors were not seeing the appeal of his first appearance when there are better investments to be had.
1001. SUPERMAN #61 (-2)
Despite it falling to the tail end of the Hottest Comics list, this is a great comic for any fan of the Man of Steel. In these pages, Superman makes his first return to Krypton since the series began, and the story gives a look at the origin of the planet. What makes it even more collectible is Superman #61 marked the first time kryptonite was introduced into the comics. This is an awesome issue and well worth having for the Golden Age collector, though it does come with a massive price tag as even a mid-grade copy will cost you close to $1k.
