Captain America #6
Marvel Comics
Remender & Romita Jr
The latest issue of Captain America might be the best one to date for the Rick Remender run on the title. Cap has picked himself up from the depths of defeat and chargers after Zola to retrieve his adopted son, Ian. The book is really the character defining issue that Remender has been trying to build towards all along. This one does manage to juxtapose how Cap can rise above the ordinary and how the weak simply can't very well. Compounding this is the complete reversal of how Cap views his adversary versus how she feels about him. It's a good read.
Cap finds his way into Zola's lair. While he does this we are treated to his inner narration which includes his thoughts on potentially returning to Earth in favor of getting help rather than rescuing Ian immediately. This helps to ground Cap more in reality by giving a nod to his acknowledgement that he considered it only to ultimately dismiss the idea. His rationale also ties together the flashback sequences from previous issues.
Ian is not himself as Zola has ingrained some impure thoughts into the boy that will be explored in subsequent issues. There is quite a bit of back and forth but Zola does make a convincing argument to the boy. However, the real interesting plot thread is that of his deadly sister, Black Jet. She is fixated on how Cap spared her life in a previous issue and finds herself facing Cap again in this issue. The reversal here plays for terrific drama.
Romita's art is good. I can't say it's a perfect match for the story because there is a lot of drama in the dialogue but the art caters more towards the action. Overall the visuals are good, especially the scenery while following Cap's journey.
Captain America, the title, has some challenges. The long story that Remender is telling requires a leap of faith because the book appears to be out of continuity. However, his character work can't be denied and that has helped to make the comic enjoyable. This particular issue is one of those pay off issues where the drama comes to a head. This is a good comic book.
