The stunning conclusion to the Space Cakes arc contains a shocking death wrapped up in a very interesting story. The comic really accelerates the pace of this series and lets the reader know that the fun time for the comic appears to be mostly over. The creativity of the book never ceases to amaze and entertain me. This is a top notch comic book.

Up to this point, Chew has a knack for introducing tremendous characters. Whether it's Tony Chu and his ability to read things from food, the half cyborg partner, frog/chicken hybrid or the assassin rooster the book is loaded with interesting characters. This is probably the highest profile character to die and it leaves a powerful impact. I won't spoil who dies but I will say that it is fairly brutal to witness.

The comic is supposed to be about Tony's twin, Toni, and her wedding. However, a character is kidnapped, tortured and this all leads to an eventual death. The interesting piece to this part of the comic is the usage of the "powers" that the kidnapper and kidnapped partake in. The execution is cleverly done. I also enjoyed the specific motivation beyond the kidnapping as it seems to speak to the broader story in Chew.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsGuillory tells a fantastic visual story. He's got a fantastic flow to the entire story and he knows how to use the layouts to his advantage for side humor without taking away from the primary story. This issue has Guillory make some great usage of his horrific side more than previous ones. The book is gorgeous all the way around.

Chew is a terrific read. This issue really takes a somber turn but it still does it in a very Chew way. The book still has thirty issues left from here but it certainly seems we will be seeing more of these types of depressing issues. This represents doing "death" right in comics. It's emotional and it fits the story. It certainly doesn't seem to be done simply to shock the reader, though it definitely did do that. This is a comic not to be missed.
