Drax #1
Marvel Comics
CM Punk, Bunn, Hepburn & Milla
"Drax" launches with a fun read. The comic is basically about Drax's quest to find and kill Thanos, the villain that destroyed Drax's life by killing his family. The comic has some laughs and manages to provide a solid foundation for the character, while still moving the plot along. This is a solid read and a good start to the series.
The book opens with, what appears to be, the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting some group of creatures that are trying to detonate a bomb. When the crisis ends, the characters all go off in their own directions for various reasons. Drax is left with nothing to do so he decides to rekindle the fire of revenge.
Drax interacts mostly with Rocket Raccoon. Rocket helps Drax out by loaning Drax a ship to purse his quest. The ship turns out to be a dud and this puts Drax into a sticky situation or two.
The book moves along at a nice pace. The comic has some action and some good characterizations for the supporting cast. The writing for Drax tries to find that balance between humor, anger and determination. It works for the most part but it does read a little bumpy at times.
The artwork is good. Stories in space are better served with some imagination in the artwork and this comic has that. The book also have a lively look to it with detailed lines and brighter colors. The comic also captures some very good facial reactions from Drax, which help sell the humor he's trying to get across.
"Drax" starts out with a very solid first issue. Drax finds himself on a break from the Guardians and decides to embark on a quest to find and kill Thanos. This comic provides some action, good characterizations and launches the plot for the book. The artwork helps to round out the reading experience nicely. This series is off to a good start.
