Fly #3
Zenescope Comics
Gregory & J
The third issue of Fly begins to piece together more of the puzzle and is setting up for an interesting conclusion to this story. This book reminds me so much of a Mark Millar story and that means plenty of violence and a story that goes into directions that you just don't expect. In that regard the issue is very entertaining. The flaws in the issue seem to be based with the fast pace of the story as the characters just don't seem to be doing natural things in a normal timeline. Overall, this is a fun read.
The issue is really split into two stories. One story deals with the flashbacks of how the main characters ended up taking the drugs that gave them super abilities while the other side deals with the present day. The present day story is much more intriguing.
The present opens with a beaten Eddie as he finds his way to Francis. It's clear this picks up from the events where his wife gets done beating him to a pulp. It's not entirely clear how or why Francis would care or what he would even do about it. The possibilities of these scenes really are endless. It's not clear if Danielle is the only threat or whether or not Francis is really on Eddie's side. This is a good mystery that is slowly evolving.
The flashbacks have a lot of Francis. In fact, he (and his family) are front and center when a psycho comes looking for the dealer of the drugs that give out super human ability. It's going to be very interesting to see how Gregory ties all of this together because at this point I have a lot of different guesses and theories.
The main problem I have is with Eddie's rescue of Danielle in the flashbacks. As far as I can tell he rescues Danielle from her dad raping her and the next day she is back at school asking Eddie out. This after Eddie killed her dad and she presumable knows this. It all felt way too fast to be natural by any means. Then again, Danielle appears to be a nut job when she grows up so you never know.
The artwork is very good. The story is very fluid and gives a great sequence of events, especially at the end of the issue. I felt like the visuals were telling just as much story as the writing was in this issue. I also liked that the flashbacks had an entirely different look to them to set them apart. Overall this is a solid art effort to companion the story.
Fly is shaping up to be a good story. It's not just a paint-by-numbers story where regular people stumble into getting powers. There are a couple of threads here that will presumably dovetail into a great story. I know I will be there for the next issue.
