Groot #4
Marvel Comics
Loveness & Kesinger
This is a great comic book. I read the comic three times looking for something that would stand out as a flaw and didn't find one. The comic book is a humor book but it tells the reader all they could ever want about the lead character and it brings in a very strong supporting cast while telling a simple, but entertaining story around a basic plot. This is a great comic book to pick up whether you are a fan of Groot, Guardians or just good comic book fun.
Groot is looking for Rocket Raccoon. Rocket is being held captive by a bounty hunter that is really just using Rocket as bait to catch Groot. Groot finds a ragtag bunch of characters in his final leg of his journey to Rocket. The motley bunch storms the place where Rocket is captive with disastrous results.
The comic book sounds so simple. And in many ways it is. However, Loveness tells the story in an engaging way that allows Rocket to voice his feelings about Groot as the reader then gets to watch Groot act them out. We get such a great look into the characters' hearts and how they feel about each other. The book isn't violent or shocking but it has some powerful images, particularly at the end. The comic mixes humor into the story to keep a smile on the reader's face, but the heart of the book is the bond that Groot and Rocket have with each other.
The artwork has that all-ages look to it. The best part of the artwork is how well Kesinger uses the facial expressions from Groot to add emotion to his simple dialogue of "I Am Groot." We get a lot of tone from the simple words when it mixes so well with the visuals. The comic book also has some very creative looking characters as Groot finds some of the oddest bunch in space.
Groot is a story about a bond between friends. The comic book is a humor book but it is not done in an over-the-top way that you might expect from Deadpool. Instead the book has sweetness to it as Groot's innocence mixes so well with the cranky Rocket Raccoon. The comic has a simple rescue plot at work but the execution of the book is fantastic as Rocket narrates his feelings on Groot as Groot goes through the steps to round up a team and attempt his rescue of Rocket. The comic book is a fantastic read and may be the most charming comic book I've read all year. I highly recommend picking this up.
