Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews
Higher Earth #1
Boom! Studios
Humphries & Biagini
Boom! releases a space adventure issue at the introductory price of $1. Before I even opened the book I knew I was getting some value. I was pleased to find that this story provided an exciting read that had a small cast with a big setup to a larger universe. I thought the book hit all the right notes for a space adventure and I plan to pick up future issues. This was a great find for the content and price point.
The book opens with a man falling from the sky and crashing on what appears to be a planet made of junk. He's being hunted but he is on this planet with a purpose. He is looking for someone that he knows from an alternate universe. This universe's version has no idea of who he is though. This allows the reader to get the gist of the setup of the book while getting to know the characters a little bit at the same time. The book ends just as the pair's adventure begins. We don't know everything about what they are running from or where they are trying to get to, but we know it's very dangerous.
The book is a fun read. There is no shortage of creativity in the scenery or the character designs. Even though the whole concept of parallel universes isn't new by any means, this book makes everything feel fresh and as if anything is possible from this point forward. There is something very appealing for a story to give the impression that there are endless possibilities when you finish it, much in the way I felt after seeing the first Star Wars film.
The artwork is very good. There are plenty of big pages of action throughout the book as we have pretty much wall to wall action. The artwork really presents a terrific view into the world(s), especially the giant pile of garbage. The visuals definitely compliment the story well.
This comic is a $1. It's the first step of a big space adventure. If you are into science fiction on any level you shouldn't pass this book up. If you just like general thrills and action you shouldn't pass this book up. Boom! clearly has a winner on its hands with this one.
