Kick-Ass 2 #5
Icon Comics (Marvel)
Millar & Romita Jr
Millar certainly knows how to put his characters through hell. The fifth issue of this mini-series continues the bloody massacre as Dave finds himself losing more of those close to him. The comic book is very entertaining making it something to pick up but the book is definitely light on story, as it seems like Millar is stretching this arc one or two issues more than it needs to be. Overall, this is a very good read especially if violence is your thing.
Basically the bad guys continue to torment Dave by getting to those that Dave cares about. After killing off a character that Dave is close to, the bad guys set a trap for him at said character's funeral. The book manages to explain some of the other plot points, such as why Dave's dad is in jail instead of him. As well as how Dave and not his friends was targeted by the cops.
The comic book comes to life at the funeral as the blood and violence spread like wildfire. Dave is showing a wimpy side to his character in this issue, which isn't surprising, but it isn't terribly endearing either. When it's finally time to fight back what will Dave end up doing?
The book has Romita Jr's style but it clearly isn't his signature for this series as he's had significant help finishing up this issue. The book is at its best when there is a ton of blood on the page and that seems to be more of a credit to the coloring than the pencils anyway. Some of the panels definitely will put a charge into the reader while going through this issue. This isn't the best artistic effort but it does the job effectively.
Millar isn't making this series terribly clear so far. The main villain is so rich and powerful it simply doesn't add up that he can't do whatever he wants, whenever he wants to Dave. However, this isn't the kind of comic book that you are reading because it makes sense. You are most likely reading it because of the shock and awe factor and this book has it. This is definitely a guilty pleasure and this issue brings the violence just like the others. I recommend checking this out. It's a wonder Millar can sleep at night.
