Ms. Marvel #2
Marvel Comics
Wilson, Alphona & Herring
Two issues into the re-launch of Ms. Marvel and it appears Marvel has a hit on their hands. There isn't anything complicated in this issue and the overarching plot isn't really even touched upon, it's simply old-fashioned character building at its best. Sure, the book seems to follow in the classic footsteps of the likes of Spider-Man but it's done with freshness, class and style. It's a great book so far.
You probably know the story by now. A teenager finds themselves changed overnight and is scared, panicked and generally a mess. Kamala is no different in this regard. The interesting aspect of her changes is that she is a shape-shifter now and she seems to change into a light-skinned, blond haired bombshell, which is completely against what she normally looks like. Her self-image issues are right there for immediate dissection.
Then as all heroes do, they are forced into a situation that defines them forever. Will they make the "right" choice? Will they dive in and make the save or will they panic and let an innocent die? Kamala isn't ready for the situation and yet the situation finds her at her weakest moment. It's a beautiful scene.
The book is great in a lot of ways. The comic brings religion to the forefront of the comic but does so in a natural way that doesn't disrespect the religion or diminish it's importance to some versus others. It's presented in a way a lot of families probably find in day-to-day life. The book is also a character-building masterpiece. It's ground up stuff.
The artwork is fitting in every way. This isn't the kind of story that demands extra muscles or sharp line work. It's the kind of comic that needs delicate care and smooth finishes to help the reader feel the conflicts going through Kamala's head. It's a lovely book.
This comic is proof that a very old concept can still be made to feel fresh and be found interesting. It's all in the execution. It will be interesting to watch this character grow into her powers and face new challenges as they hit her. This is definitely a book to check out.
