Muppet Show #2
Boom! Kids Comics
Langridge & Cobain
As the Muppet traveling show rolls on this issue explores a stand-in character for Fozzie in the form of Clint Wacky. The issue centers around the character and puts the Muppets in a funny setting to tell the story. It's a good comic that is smart and funny at the same time while maintaining the high level of storytelling we've seen from The Muppet Show comics all along.
The Muppets fill their void left with Fozzie's departure with a comedian that is trying to make it to Hollywood in the form of Clint Wacky. Clint visually resembles Lew Zealand only he is a little less nutty looking. Clint brings along a couple of old crusty (and familiar) writers for his comedy. This creates a good dynamic as he creates trouble with various Muppets both with his attitude and through the comedy his handlers write for him.
The Muppets ends up in a town called Little Statwald. The town is populated exclusively with members of two families. You can take a guess as to which families are represented in this place. The townspeople love Clint Wacky but the tension mounts with the Muppets as they look for ways to get rid of him, even at the expense of making their show a failure to the strange sense of humor that the good people of Little Statwald hold.
The comic book is at its best when weaving in all of the new characters to mix with the existing ones. Essentially it's the Muppets against an entire town with an insider working against them in the form of Wacky. There are plenty of gags that are funny within the stage performance as well as the behind the scenes storylines. A lot of the usual Muppet favorites play little to no role in the comic but it's really not that noticeable as the other characters eat up the story and laughs.
The art is exceptional. The detail to make all of the town's residences different but still resemble the characters they are related to is a brilliant work. The Clint Wacky character is also a good design as he is made to look like a shady used car salesman. It works well and is on par with all of the other one-off characters we've seen in this series.
Another hit for the Muppets. While this comic does deviate from the regular cast, it's still an interesting story that provides some laughs. Fozzie gets a little back up story to help keep his subplot in the consciousness. It's a good read and is worth picking up if you are a fan of the gags seen in the Muppet TV Show.
