Planet Hulk #3
Marvel Comics
Humphries, Laming & Boyd
"Planet Hulk" struggles on with the third issue as the plot is still sort of in a setup state. The comic book is highlighted by the imagination of the creators in creating this odd world. On the other hand, the book is struggling because nothing really happens. The characters kind of wander around and talk about their task and occasional they get attacked. The book is a mixed bag but it at least provides something a little unique in the characterizations of the lead characters. This is an okay comic book.
Captain America, Devil Dinosaur and Doc Green continue to fight off monsters when the comic opens. Once they get clear the characters knock around the idea of how they are being manipulated. Doc Green is supposed to help Cap kill Doom, but Cap is only willing to help kill Doom in order to rescue Bucky. The dialogue comes across as a couple of characters that don't trust each other and aren't really sure what they plan to do. It seems too unfocused when they are constantly faced with deadly creatures. Turning back seems like a viable option because their hearts don't seem to be into killing Doom.
The highlight of the comic is creatures they come across. The various Hulked out things, the tribe of Hulk, even the old crazy man Hulk are extremely imaginative creations. This comic book is greatly enhanced and the pace is kept high as they continue to roll out these interesting creations.
Another highlight of the comic book is the dynamic between Cap and Doc Green. This could have been explored more if they were able to draw on their past histories. Limiting their knowledge of each other to this mini-series is a disappointment. The wishy-washy feelings about their mission shouldn't be the only topic they can discuss.
The artwork is great. The comic book moves from battle to battle and takes on new life when it deals with some of the backgrounds and settings for this world. The comic has a desolate look to it that seems fitting when the character's spirits seem to be breaking as they wander on. I enjoyed the artwork a tremendous amount.
"Planet Hulk" is an exciting read that is stalling on the plot. The characters have good chemistry but they seem to lament their mission too much. The comic book throws all kinds of various Hulked out creatures and that makes the book fun to read. The artwork helps hold the entire thing together, especially where the plot seems to be stalling. This is an average read that has some high points. Give it a look.
