Star Wars #5
Marvel Comics
Aaron, Cassady & Martin
"Star Wars" provides a fast read with an issue that has two primary stories that both work quickly to present an exciting and familiar read. The comic book mines old ideas and presents them in new light to help the reader feel comfortable and intrigued. If you like Star Wars then you will like this comic book.
The main plot watches Luke return to his home planet in search of answers. He turns to Ben's shack in hopes of figuring out why he is destined to be a Jedi. While this is occurring, Luke's identity is being researched by Boba Fett. The scenes all look extremely familiar. Fett returns to the Cantina where Han Solo and Chewie first met Kenobi and Luke. The same bar flies are hanging out there. Luke finds a lot of sand people hanging around Ben's shack. This time, Luke frightens them off rather than needing a rescue from Ben. There's nothing wrong with the repetitive nature of these events. However, while it raises a smile to see a new twist on scenes from the original movie, it would also be nice to see something a little different.
The second stream sees Han and Leia take on a mission. This plot seems less developed. The questions that come out of this are many, such as why Chewie isn't with them or anyone else for that matter. The plot seems to be primarily serving as a vehicle for the pair to build more sexual tension. Again, while it was familiar and brings a smile to the reader, it also felt odd and forced.
The book also throws out a couple of Easter Eggs from the old expanded universe as bit by bit more of the old comics and novels become part of the new canon. They are small pieces and they may seem unimportant, but to the fans of the old EU, these are special little nuggets.
The artwork is very good. The scenes are detailed and definitely look just as they would in the films. It probably makes sense to leverage so many photo stills from the movies to help frame this story up properly. This comic looks like Star Wars and it is great.
"Star Wars" is a fast moving comic book. There isn't a ton of plot or new character development, just plenty of Star Wars-like scenes. Han and Leia argue, Luke is pursued by Fett, Fett follows the trail to the Cantina plus sand people, TIE Fighters and plenty more. The comic book dusts off a lot of what was portrayed in the films and brings them to life with tiny little new twists. It's a fun ride. I recommend checking it out.
