Star Wars Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #2 of 4
Dark Horse Comics
Taylor & Scalf
The second issue of the Boba Fett mini-series really picks up the pace and the plot making the issue a very entertaining read. The book is mainly about a man named Connor (basically Boba's half-brother) but the mystery of Boba's death takes an interesting twist in this issue. The book also injects a cameo of an original trilogy character that made for a pleasant surprise. Overall, this book is a fun read.
Connor was left for dead last issue. His identity stolen and his bar destroyed, Connor was a victim of having known Boba Fett. The killers that hunted down Fett are now sweeping through everyone that knows Fett, finding them and killing them off. However, the mysteries dropped in the first issue begin to see some answers in this comic.
A guardian angel of sorts saves Connor and brings him to a bit of a twisted Doctor to be revived after the explosion. The Doctor brings back memories of the Cantina from Star Wars and is great use of the character in this comic book. Lucky for Connor he can help him out.
Connor begins to piece together what happened to Fett and what the next steps are. Without an identity, Connor is laying low on a planet that happens to have yet another bounty hunter.
The book is very well written. The pace is strong and I loved how Connor seems to stumble from one mess to another with ease. I found myself surprised at a number of the reveals in the book, which made the book a fun read all the way through.
The book isn't perfect as some of the explanations don't seem to add up. For example, the amount of time it takes to remove and re-dress another in armor seems to be done in under a minute which seems unrealistic. It also doesn't make a lot of sense that a character is seen in a hole with another and the group only settles on one dead body. Or are we to believe the group of killers only saw one character in the hole? It's a tough sell. I expect more of the story to unfold in the remaining two issues.
The artwork is good. The painted style isn't what you would expect from Star Wars but I do enjoy it. I think the artwork really brings a unique personality to Connor and manages to separate him out from the others in the book. This is perhaps the strongest part of the artwork. It's a good visual story.
This mini is shaping up to be two stories and both are good. On the one hand you have a character just trying to stay out of trouble and can't and on the other you have a good, old-fashioned revenge story. You can't lose either way. The writing has a strong hold on the characters and the art brings them to life. This is a good comic book.
