Star Wars: Lando #2
Marvel Comics
Soule, Maleev & Mounts
The second issue of "Lando" is less smooth-talking Lando or more of the narrow escape Lando. The issue has Lando and his co-conspirators trying to escape with the ship they've stolen. The comic has a lot of action and some good components to it. The artwork helps make this issue stand out among the others. I am enjoying this mini-series and recommend checking this out.
Lando doesn't know he's taken the Emperor's ship. He begins to get a clue that he's taken something important when three Star Destroyers show up looking to trap him. Lando uses his quick wits to help to keep the Empire off their backs but he's starting to realize he's going to have them on his tail for a while.
The comic has a lot of space ship pursuit and it translates well on the pages. Lando uses a couple of pirate tricks, one of which Han Solo used in a novel about 20 years ago, to get himself out of jams. They all add depth to the character and make Lando give his patented grin. As a result the comic has drama but also has a fun aspect to it.
The part of the comic that doesn't quite work is some of the dialogue. Captains on Star Destroyers competing against each other seems outlandish. An admiral offering up a reward on the spot seems farfetched as well. Some of Lando's dialogue also reads like present day slang. I just can't picture Lando saying, "Don't ruin the moment." The dialogue could have kept true to the Star Wars films in a number of places.
The artwork is gorgeous in this comic book. The parts of the book that stand out the most are the red tones draped over the character's faces as they sit in the cockpit. It's very ominous because they are in the Emperor's ship and they are in a lot more trouble than they realize. The characters look like their movie counterparts panel after panel. The Star Destroyer chase is also handled very well by the artwork. Overall, I really enjoyed the artwork in this comic book.
"Lando" has an action-packed and tense issue as Lando and friends try to escape with their prize. They don't know whose ship they've stolen or what is on the ship but they now know they have something very important. The comic book brings in some new players to add to the chase by the comic's end. This is a very solid read backed up with stunning visuals. I recommend checking this comic book out.
