Superman: Lois Lane #1
DC Comics
Bennett, Lupacchino, Hetrick, Guara & Neves
Sometimes a random one-shot is the perfect book to check out. Not fully understanding why this comic is being published or how it fits into any one story or continuity, I found this one-shot to be a very comprehensive and interesting read. It's a Lois story that shows off her investigative skills, her abilities as an action hero and some of her origin story. The threads are then tied to her sister, Lucy, as the comic seems to tackle more than just a Lois driven story. I enjoyed this book and I recommend checking this out.
Lois gets a visit from her sister in distress, Lucy, as Lucy's girlfriend seems to have been abducted. Lois has limited information to go off of, but she embarks on a journey to find her sister's girlfriend. What she finds is something a lot more sinister than a simple kidnapping.
The book is broken up with snippets of the sisters when they were younger. These scenes are a little bit clichéd with the sick mother, military father and the nurturing older sister, but these scenes are tied up nicely by the story's end.
The aspect of the book that I found to be the most compelling is the surprises that are thrown in there left and right. There are plenty of twists in this story that include monsters, secret agencies and a whole lot more. The book is thick with dialogue and narration, but there is some nice action to break up the scenes and keep the book moving along. The comic weighs in at nearly forty pages and you certainly get a full read by the issue's end.
The comic book has an army and I mean an army of artists on it. Four on pencils, four inks and a company on colors might make for something of a disaster. Not the case in this book though. The artwork is consistent virtually throughout. The visuals are good at helping the story along through the wordy narrative. There is a good balance here that helps to round out the book.
Lois Lane is a good comic to pick up. It feels like it's more of a story about Lucy than Lois but there is certainly a good focus on Lois and detective/reporter skills. The plot is a strange one, but different. This is the kind of book that makes you wonder why DC doesn't find a way to give her a solo series. Anyway, this is a good and dense read for your five bucks. I recommend checking this out.
