Swamp Thing #5
DC Comics
Snyder & Paquette
Sometimes all it takes is some good, old-fashioned action to get a comic book clicking and that is exactly what this issue provides. Snyder has been building up a few threads that mesh together in this issue, but for me, the action is what makes the book enjoyable. The unfortunate aspect of the book is that the story that Snyder is building issue after issue will make it more and more difficult for a new reader to jump in. This could be a missed opportunity because of all of the positive buzz this book has month in and month out. If only DC would utilize the recap page. This is a terrific read.
The bulk of the issue pits Abby and Alec against William and his flock of dead animals. The beauty of the issue lies in the gruesomeness of the confrontation and how Abby and Alec draw closer as a result of the battle.
Alec calls on some help from the wildlife in order to put a stop to William. However, what appears to be the turning point in their struggle against William and his dead cohorts as well as the turning point in Alec and Abby’s reunited relationship is not what it would seem. In the words of Admiral Ackbar, “It’s a trap!!” and it helps to set up an excellent cliffhanger.
The strength of the story is enhanced a lot by the art, particularly the page layouts. Paquette continues to use non-rectangular panels as the page layouts take on the shape of the plant-life that this book is based on. The pages where Alec finally calls on his vegetation power have the most effective use of these unusual layout shapes. The impact of what Alec achieves is much more powerful because of Paquette’s presentation. The ghastly images in the book are not to be overlooked as they help cement this book in the horror genre. The artwork in this book is excellent.
Swamp Thing is a very good read. I can’t say I’m as all in as so many other readers are but I can see the book taking nice shape with a long term direction. Clearly, this is the kind of book that rewards the readers that have been paying attention all along and there is something to be said for that kind of detail. However, I am glad to see some plain, old action once in a while and that is what we have here. That, and a heck of a surprise at the end. This was a fun read.
