Uncanny Avengers #6
Marvel Comics
Remender & Acuna
Uncanny Avengers hits its stride in what is its best effort to date by a long shot. Remender turns in a Thor centric story that fits neatly like a puzzle with the story that Jason Aaron is telling over in Thor: God of Thunder. The book manages to introduce a good plot while advancing the one from the prior issue and it manages to build upon Thor as a character regardless if you are reading Aaron's book or not. This is a good comic.
Thor goes up against Apocalypse in this issue. However, all is not what it seems to be as Remender has a couple of tricks up his sleeve. The battle(s) take place centuries ago as this past Thor is a perfect match for Aaron's version of a similar time period.
Remender doesn't simply stick to Thor and Apocalypse though. We also get a good dose of Odin and Loki which help make the comic book very comfortable and familiar. Thor comes across as brave, brash, strong but a little dumb. The interactions between the three Asgardians are fantastic. Remender clearly has this dynamic nailed.
The comic book has a fantastic flow to it as Remender opens with a nice fight, brings it back down to build up the plot then ends with a bang and a twist. Overall, the pacing and mix of character work and action makes for a great read.
The book looks fantastic as Acuna nails the artwork. The action is literally jumping off the pages in some places while Acuna's depiction of Asgard is every bit as grand as the blockbuster movie made it out to be. The comic book is an excellent visual match to the story that Remender is telling here.
Without the cover you would never know this wasn't a Thor book. I'm not sure where Remender is going with all of this but it is clear that some of these elements are going to have a long tail in books and arcs to come. While the book might feel like a complete shift in what's come before I believe it to be a welcome one. Remender is still trying to sort out the team and their interactions and it is nice to see a good long look at one character for an issue. However, I can see some disappointment if you aren't a Thor fan. I enjoyed this book and I hope to see more of this from this series. I recommend picking this one up.
