Welcome back to this week's Weekly Auction Gem rundown! Each week, we'll look at Heritage's weekly Sunday - Tuesday comic auction, their weekly video game auction, and their weekly poster auction to see which items should be on your radar!
The Empire Strikes Back One Sheet
1980's The Empire Strikes Back needs little introduction. The follow-up to Star Wars (A New Hope), received mixed reviews but has since gone on to be regarded as one of the best in the franchise. Vintage Star Wars collectibles can be highly sought after, especially theatrical posters.z
This one-sheet Style A linen poster is in Very Fine condition per Heritage and presents extremely well. In January 2022 Heritage sold a similar example for $960. Prior to that, another linen Style A poster sold for $2,400 in September 2019.
Action Comics #18
Early Action Comics are some of the hardest comics to come by. This dramatic war cover by Fred Guardineer was the last Action Comic to feature a non-Superman-related cover.
This CGC blue label 4.5 has Off-White to White pages and presents extremely well. The last sale for a similarly graded book was in November 2012 for $1,185. By comparison, the current fair market value for a blue-label 4.0 is $2,150, so I expect this book to go over $3,000.
Donald Duck 1935
This Disney grail was the first time Donald Duck ever stared in his own book. This collectible piece is sixteen pages, and according to Heritage, there is staple rust and some staining but is overall a Good copy.
This book is an affordable piece of early Disney, with many copies selling for under $300 on eBay. In December of 2022, Heritage sold a similar example for $528, which is on the high end for this book. If you're looking to add this book to your collection, I wouldn't pay more than $250.
Jungle Comics #58
Right away this dynamic Good Girl Art cover by Joe Doolin catches the eye. The colors on this cover have faded, so this might turn off many collectors. Heritage notes that this raw copy appears to be in Fine condition, with the top right corners chipping.
There isn't a lot of recent sales data for this book. A CGC blue label 9.0 example sold for $384 in February of 2021. I wouldn't be surprised if this book sold for under $110. This is ideal for a collector, but for an investor, I would steer clear.
WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game Sealed WATA 9.4 A+
One of the best wrestling video games, this arcade cab port featured great graphics, easy gameplay, and over-the-top moves. This single or multiplayer game was released across a number of platforms, including the Super Nintendo and its competitor the Sega Genesis.
The game was well-received and is one of my favorite games to date. This sealed WATA-graded 9.4 A+ copy is great. The current one-year average for this game is $272 making it an affordable collectible for wrestling fans.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park Sealed WATA 9.6 A+
I was 11 when Jurassic Park came out in theaters, and despite my general interest in seeing the movie, my parents wouldn't let me. Video games and toys were allowed tho! Of course, with any big blockbuster comes video games, and in 1997 we saw a Jurassic Park video game for both the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation.
The game was received with mixed reviews, but almost everyone praised the soundtrack by Michael Giacchino, who also composed music for Speed Racer, Ratatouille, Jurassic World, Lost, Call of Duty, and even the (new) Space Mountain soundtrack at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. This sealed WATA-graded 9.4 A+ has a one-year average of $127, though prices have been trending down.
