I really hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during the pandemic. It appears that everyone around the world is affected by this virus. In the comics world, I am sure many individuals are adjusting to putting collecting second in their lives. Another part of the world that has taken a back seat is comic book conventions. Since the pandemic started affecting the world, early 2021 is when comic-cons took a big hit. The mass gatherings at these events were canceled and were put on ice for next year. Basically, comic fans cannot wait till 2021 comes around. Apparently, convention season is ready to begin for 2021. The schedule can be found here for anyone to view on gamesradar.com.
Exact Dates Uncertain
I first want to inform everyone that the dates on the site for each convention are not confirmed for 2021. I looked at some random conventions and here is what I mean. For example, Alaska ComiCon is scheduled to take place on February 27-28 2021. In looking at the actual site of the convention, you will first notice that the date has been rescheduled for July 31-August 1 2021. Obviously, this is clearly attributed to health reasons due to COVID-19. This is an example that some conventions will be delayed as planners are trying to make the necessary adjustments in making the environment safe for guests. In addition, there is no handbook on how to deal with mass gatherings. Lastly, each state is governed differently, so large scale events could be scaled down tremendously.
Safety First
Safety is the number one goal in running a successful event during these times. Conventions are informing prospective guests on what is needed in order to attend events. One convention, The Big Lick Comic-Con in Roanoke, Virginia, is presenting precise guidelines on how to deal with COVID-19. We all know that everyone has to adapt to this situation. This particular convention plans to move forward with the dates listed. Examples include masks to be worn at all times, temperature checks, and newly remodeled restrooms that feature contact-less sinks, dispensers, and hand driers. All in all, the show must go on. We have to find a way to make headway until a vaccine is available for the mass public.
Going Virtual
One shift that many comic-cons are doing more and more due to the pandemic are virtual events prior to the convention actually beginning. One example of this is GalaxyCon holding virtual events such as Q&A, virtual photo ops, and OnetoOne video chats. The actual live date of the convention is set for now on March 19-21 2021. For the time being, this convention is holding virtual events with celebrities. Some of these experiences may or may not require a fee as well. That is mainly dependent on the actual virtual experience. There is a FAQ link that informs anyone that has questions or directions on how to access the event.
Conclusion
All in all, I am excited that this season's comic-cons appear to be back on track for 2021. Though some events could be delayed for health reasons, the majority of them should proceed as followed. Event planners know that adjustments have to be made and that includes limiting people to the event. It will be interesting how that is done since the majority of people attending are "holdovers" from last year if the event was canceled. Everyone please stay safe, and let's try to enjoy another season of comic book conventions.
