An unforgettable auction and moment for comic collectors is rapidly approaching over at Landry Pop Auctions.
In just over a day, early bidding on what has been dubbed The Paperboy Collection will close as some freshly unearthed relics are presented on the auction floor to finish LIVE with the public!
The collection consists of Platinum and Golden Age comics from a variety of genres and prominence. Listed amongst them are two of the most coveted Batman issues ever released – A Detective Comics #27 in a CGC 4.0, and a Detective Comics #31 in a CGC 7.0.
Scattered throughout the rest you’ll find everything from early Superman to incredibly obscure Star Comics, science-fiction, humor, and rarities that you simply do not see come up for sale very often.
We spoke with Landry Pop Auctions Founder Travis Landry about what makes the Paperboy Collection unique, how it was amassed, and what this means to the collecting world at large as yet another lost treasure trove of books is unearthed.
The Paperboy Collection is the kind of discovery you dream about but never expect to actually happen. It was assembled nearly a century ago by a young boy in rural Maine, using money he earned from his paper route. When his family later moved to a dry desert town in California, the comics were stored away—and thanks to the stable climate and decades of care, they’ve survived in astonishing original condition. To find an untouched, original-owner collection like this is almost unheard of in today’s market.
As someone who has made comic books and pop culture my life, words can’t fully express what this means to me. If you had asked me last year whether I thought I’d ever come across a fresh-to-market Detective Comics #27, I would have said no—let alone one of the highest-grade copies of Detective #31 in existence. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime discovery.
What makes it even more meaningful is that these books remained with the same family for more than 85 years, and now, their daughter has entrusted us to bring them to market. That’s a big deal—for me personally and for our company. Even beyond the marquee titles, you just don’t see early books like Action Comics #10 and #13 come out of collections like this anymore. Most of what’s on the market has passed through several hands.
I know some collectors might think I’m crazy, but I did read Detective #27 and #31 before sending them off to be graded. I had to—they’re comics, and they’re meant to be read.
We’re honored to be able to preserve this history and offer it back to the public. I’m excited to see these books find new homes where they’ll be appreciated and protected for another generation or more. That’s the real magic of this collection.
Preserving the Books, the Data, and the People Who Made This Happen
Seeing as this is such an unforgettable auction and ultimately a grand moment in the comic community, Landry Pop Auctions and GoCollect are taking the necessary steps to include these auction results on our platform. This means that these rare and obscure titles from the Paperboy Collection will not fade into memory. Instead, each of these books and the values they reach will be the first inductees from LPA to hit the database of GoCollect’s ever-growing and robust pricing guide.
We can't risk having you miss a single sale that happens out there. Not just for your buying and collecting, but for who you choose to consign your items with when that time arrives. Landry Pop Auctions is doing everything right when it comes to making relationships and closing sales and it's time you added them to your Rolodex of trusted specialists. You may not have the pennies saved to make a bid on the books highlighted here, but you'll definitely have room to play with some of the stuff in this auction. I checked it out prior to publishing one last time and there are Golden Age goodies sitting at low-entry values right now! Just a handful are waiting for you to start the bidding.
