Welcome back to this week's top pics from Heritage's weekly comic book auctions! Heritage holds weekly funny book auctions that feature key issues, overlooked comics, oddball memorabilia items, and more. These auctions are a must if you want to beef up your collection! Here are my top picks for you to watch.
Crime SuspenseStories #17
Pre-code horror is known for its shocking covers, so much so that they would inevitably lead to the Comics Code Authority. We've seen it all - severed heads, hanging bodies, zombies. And yet, for some reason, this cover absolutely shocked me. The realistic gun and the brain matter flying out from the gunshot wound are just startling. The tears falling from the victim's eyes stick out the most to me, making this cover feel real. If you collect pre-code horror, you are probably familiar with cover artist Johnny Craig. The artist and writer created many shocking (yet stunning) covers for EC before the publisher went under. Crime SuspenseStories itself would only last 27 issues, as it was printed bimonthly between 1950-1955.
Heritage notes that this ungraded book is in Very Good- condition, page quality unknown. There is currently no sales data for ungraded copies on GoCollect, but a copy in the 3.5 grade last sold for $504 at Heritage slightly over a month ago.
The Newlyweds and Their Baby
Before George McManus would go on to create the Platinum Age hit Bringing Up Father, he created The Newlyweds in 1904. The Newlyweds was the first American family cartoon strip, becoming very popular after its debut. This would grant McManus more work, and we would even get books of The Newlyweds. Unfortunately, many of these books (and strips) are lost to time. Occasionally, something of the series will appear, such as this hardback copy of The Newlyweds and Their Baby. As with most Platinum Age books, this likely collected strips that were previously published in the newspaper. This graphic novel archetype is outstanding.
Heritage notes this book to be in Good condition with bright pages. This is a very hard book to find. If you're a fan of comic book history, do not overlook this book. Current bid at publication is just $1.
RoboCop Versus The Terminator #1 CGC Universal 9.8
Some might say the perfect comic book doesn't exist. Those people have never beheld the beauty that is RoboCop versus The Terminator. This comic was written by Frank Miller in arguably his prime, with cover and interior art by Walt Simonson, making for one hell of a team-up. Capitalizing on the success of both franchises, this mini-series would try and make a franchise of its own, with a somewhat popular video game being released a year after the comic. There were even talks of a movie, but to date, that has not happened. This feud is a match made in heaven (or hell), and in a surprising twist, RoboCop may have been an inevitable bad guy the whole time.
This CGC Universal 9.8 screams. The book features white pages and a dynamic cover. The current fair market value for this book is $70, making it an affordable and fun collectible. There are a million reasons why anyone should buy this comic - but the number one reason? It's just plain fun.
