Rick Griffin made a name for himself before he began designing psychedelic concert posters. He began his art career by designing comics for Surfer Magazine in Southern California. He created a character named Murphy who became an identifying factor for the magazine. He went on to design some of the most recognizable psychedelic posters of all time. Griffin pioneered a unique lettering style that was inspired both by his interest in comics and a fascination with the Old West.
