Could the Sinestro Corps War be on the DCEU horizon? Recent Green Lantern series news points in that direction, and that could make Green Lantern #10 a gamble worth taking.
THE LONGSTANDING RUMORS
Remember when Geoff Johns teased a Green Lantern Corps movie? Sure, the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern film had left a bad taste in mouths worldwide, but this had potential. After all, Johns revolutionized the GL titles from Rebirth to the Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night. He claimed he was writing the script and wanted to get behind the director’s chair. Did it matter that he did not have any directing experience? Not really, considering how badly the first Green Lantern movie turned out, and it had a veteran director at the helm.
For years, that rumor stayed alive. Nothing was certain about it, but Johns continued touting that the Green Lantern Corps film was on the way. Now it seems that instead of a Corps movie, we are getting an HBO Max series. That could be even better.
THE PLAYERS OF GREEN LANTERN
The reports circulating the internet has it that the Green Lantern series will feature Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Alan Scott, Sinestro, and Kilowog. Noticeably absent are Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Why have they been left out? DC Comics insists another Green Lantern movie is still on the board, so the speculation is that Hal and John will be the stars of that franchise.
Even without those two heavy hitters, the HBO Max Green Lantern series has a solid lineup. What is even more intriguing is that DC will supposedly feature the Yellow Lantern Corps. That could set up the much-rumored Sinestro Corps War coming to HBO Max.
THE PERFECT FIT
The Sinestro Corps is no children’s story. For fans of Geoff Johns’ masterpiece, this is a violent, bloody space war that proved how mature Green Lantern stories could be. While none of us were expecting anything on this scale from the Ryan Reynolds film, many were hoping for something slightly darker than the family-friendly movie that came to be.
Ever since DC began producing live-action streaming shows for its properties, those titles have been dark and gritty with a TV-MA rating. Doom Patrol, which began on the DC Universe app, is filled with adult themes, adult language, and gore, and it has been a hit.
HBO is the perfect home for the Sinestro Corps War to come to life in all its dark, bloody glory. Putting this story on the big screen would result in too much watering down, but on HBO Max, it has the potential to stay true to its comics roots.
GREEN LANTERN #10 (2006)
The Sinestro Corps made its debut in 2006 in the pages of Green Lantern #10. If we do indeed see the Yellow Lanterns on the small screen, this issue will get a rub from the attention. Luckily for investors, it is not a hot commodity just yet.
To sweeten the pot, GL #10 also saw the first appearance of Arkillo, the Sinestro Corps’ enforcer, and I anticipate he will come to the HBO series in one fashion or another.
The first print has not seen a sale since a 9.8 brought $50 in 2019. On eBay, most listings are for $10 or less, so there is not much to risk.
There is also the second print to consider. Graded at a 9.8, the last one that traded hands online brought $65 a year ago. It is also hard to find on eBay, so this could be the issue to have.
