Where'r My X‑Men & Wolverine Fans At?
Are you a hard core Claremont fan, or maybe newer to the Wolverine legend and eager to learn why Chris Claremont matters so much to us, and further, why Marvel Paragon Collection: Chris Claremont #1 is such a modern collector’s adamantium-laced gem?
Wolverine.
Our gruff, mysterious, haunted muscle-bound badass we know today, is really thanks to Chris Claremont. Though Wolverine was created by writer Len Wein with Marvel art director John Romita Sr. designing Wolvie’s costume, and first drawn for publication by Herb Trimpe, and wait - ROY THOMAS, who tasked the team with designing a new CANADIAN superhero, it was Claremont IMHO who really helped make him iconic.
Before we get into things, I need to give a quick shout-out to Zedric Dimalanta for an OUTSTANDING overview of Wolverine’s costume designs from start-to-current, which is just a really fun read too: See TUMBLR Blog
From Wolverine’s debut in Uncanny X‑Men #94 onward, Claremont fleshed out Logan’s murky past, healing factor, world‐war exploits, and his inner conflict between beast and hero. Note to any non-X-Men history buffs, Uncanny X-Men #94 is a milestone issue for X-Men fans.
This issue dramatically changed the X-Men lineup, where the entire old roster left the team except for Cyclops and Professor X and new heroes were added on after the colossal success of Giant-Size X-Men #1 (May, 1975) where Professor intro’d the all new team…and of course, BOTH titles are available on VeVe Digital Collectibles for true, digital asset ownership!
DEEP Character Development
Claremont didn’t just frame Wolverine as a violent loner, he layered in emotional depth: love for Jean Grey or Mariko, parentage revelations, PTSD echoes, mentor bonds with Kitty Pryde and Jubilee, even thwarted death plots like the Master‐Assassin twist that prefigured future storylines (Tumblr, Wikipedia, Comic Book Historians). His 1982 solo miniseries with Frank Miller is a key moment. Wolverine travels to Japan, battling the Hand and unveiling his soul, not just his claws (Wikipedia, Vulture).
That’s why Marvel Paragon Collection: Chris Claremont #1, published in May 2021, holds serious collector value. The limited collector edition hardcover, priced around USD $200 at release, celebrates Claremont’s legacy with exclusive art (Steve McNiven cover, Tom Reilly interiors) and bonus content. Graded copies in pristine condition still pull prices near that $200 mark, with 9.8 CGC grades hovering in the $400 - $450 zone, per GoCollect.
COMICWATCH’S DEC 2020 Write-Up:
"Written by Chris Claremont exclusively for the MARVEL MADE platform, the new Wolverine comic ties directly into the days of his legendary 1982 Wolverine limited series with Frank Miller and include the world debut of Chris Claremont’s Days of Future Past prequel story.
Claremont, responsible for guiding the X-Men from a fringe bi-monthly book in 1975 to the company’s top-selling comic, major franchise and spinoff generator by the time he left in 1991, gave him unparalleled authorship in the company’s history. In a press release from Marvel, Claremont said about this project:
“Time passes—unnoticed—and the hours I spent pitching to Frank in a mid-summer I5 tailback (that’s a ‘traffic jam’ for everyone on the west side of the Pond) became a 4-issue triumph. Not so long after that, those issues were joined by a two-part sequel to become—something even better. For me, it was a chance to work with Frank Miller & Paul Smith—two of the finest storytellers in this business, then & now—to create a story that reads as well today as it did then. Action-a-plenty, sure, but most satisfying of all for me, characters that were visually alive and emotionally vital. And those characters are who we’ll be seeing again in this exclusive new book.”
