Comic book collecting has evolved into a passionate and dynamic pursuit, with collectors and investors always on the lookout for the next big thing. But what does it take for a comic to secure a coveted spot on GoCollect's Top 20 Hottest Comics List?
In this blog post, we'll embark on a journey to uncover the secrets behind this prestigious ranking. Join us as we explore the factors and strategies that propel comics into the limelight.
Understanding GoCollect's Hottest Comics List
Before we dive into the specifics, let's first understand what GoCollect's Hottest Comics List represents. This list is a curated selection of the most sought-after comic books in the market, reflecting trends, collector demand, and pricing data.
These numbers are derived from verified online sales of graded comics from major auction sites such as eBay and Heritage Auction. It's a valuable resource for collectors, investors, and enthusiasts looking to stay ahead of the curve. The Hottest Comics list is based on the quantity of sales whereas the Chartbusters list is based on the price of sold comics.
Some Numbers
I went through the top 20 list of Hottest Comics for each of the sections and here is what I found.
Based on the Top 20 list over the past 60 days, in the Modern list, there are (8) first issue comics. There are (11) non first issue “key” issues. Only 1 comic fits in the “other” category, loosely. The 2023 Foil Edition Incredible Hulk #181 is and isn’t a key issue, depending on who you ask. In the Copper top 20 list, there are (9) first issue comics and (11) key issues. In the Bronze list, there are (8) first issues and (12) key issues. Lastly, in the Silver list, there are (5) first issues and (15) key issues.
At first, I was a little surprised that there wasn’t a bit more diversity… and then I remembered that these are graded comics, not raw. So investment mentality is where it’s at! It’s easy to make the connection when looking BACK at books, but how do you know which first issues, and which key issues to get now that will show up on the list later?
The Journey to Chartbuster Status
So, what does it take for a comic book to achieve chartbuster status on GoCollect? Here are some key factors that play a significant role:
1. Rarity and Scarcity
Comics that become scarce due to low print runs, limited editions, or historical significance often attract collectors' attention. First appearances of characters or key storylines that are no longer in print can drive up demand. Finding those key storylines while they are in print and knowing they are worth getting is a talent.
2. Pop Culture Influence
Comics that tie into popular movies, TV shows, or streaming series obviously tend to gain traction. Successful adaptations on the big and small screens can lead to increased collector interest. We all know that, but which ones to look at now? There are so many new characters being added to multiple universes, so how do you know which ones have potential in the future?
3. Creative Team and Artistry
Comics featuring renowned writers, artists, or creative teams often garner attention. Exceptional storytelling, artwork, or cover designs can make a comic stand out. Knowing the artists and writers that are going to become the next generations Stan Lee is going to be difficult. Let’s be real, there will never be another Stan Lee.
4. Historical Significance
Comics with historical importance, such as landmark issues or key moments in comic book history, hold appeal. First appearances of iconic characters or major storyline arcs can drive collector enthusiasm.
5. Speculation and Investment
Comics that investors believe will appreciate in value over time may experience a surge in demand. Speculation can play a role, with collectors eyeing comics they believe have long-term investment potential.
6. Timing
Probably the most notable thing on this list is time. Sure, there are comics that pop off suddenly and get surprise show announcements and such. However, more often than not, it’s timing. If you’re looking for a quick cash grab then comic collecting/investing is not the place for you unless you have the budget and some really knowledgeable people guiding you.
Take a look at any book on the top 20 hottest comics list on GoCollect right now and find one that doesn’t fit into these categories, if not multiple categories. Investment in comics is a hard game, but it’s all about strategy. It’s easy to buy first issues, and “keys”. It’s much harder to find the unique diamonds in the rough that will bloom over time.
So how do you see a comic you bought yesterday at your LCS in a spot on GoCollect's Top 20 Hottest Comics List in a matter of years?
It’s no small feat, and it involves a combination of rarity, pop culture influence, creative brilliance, historical significance, and investment potential.
For collectors and investors, understanding these factors is crucial for identifying comics with the potential to become chart-toppers. As the world of comic book collecting continues to evolve, keep an eye on GoCollect's list for the latest insights into what's sizzling hot in the comic book market.
