As we approach New Year's, here's four comics that could spell profits for you in 2019 thanks to the MCU and Netflix.
MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS #7
Wait. Did that just say Secret Wars #7? It supposed to say Secret Wars #8, right?
You are not mistaken; Secret Wars #7 is heating up, and now is a good time to get in while the investment overhead is low. What's so special about this issue? It's the first appearance of the black-suit Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter.
This time last year, only the most hardcore of Spider-Woman fans would have collected this outside of someone wanting a full run of the original Secret Wars. In fact, the only graded 9.8 SW #7 that sold in December 2017 was for $60, which isn't too much above the costs of having it graded in the first place. As we rolled into 2018, the price only went down as the first three sales topped at $49. Then came November, at which point SW #7 exploded.
After Sony announced that an all-female follow-up to Into the Spider-Verse was in the works, speculators pounced. After toiling in the $50-$65 range for well over a year, a 9.8 SW #7 hasn't sold for less than $221 since November 21. A 9.6, which had averaged just $28 a year ago, has almost doubled in its 90-day fair market value of $54.
For months, Kevin Feige has been insinuating that the stage is being set for the Young Avengers. Marvel's answer to DC's Teen Titans, it's a group of sidekicks/acquaintances of the superhero mainstays. Since Feige gave his hint in June, the value of Young Avengers #1 has been climbing.
For the past two years, a 9.8 YA #1 stayed within the $60-$80 range. Back in February, one sold for just $18. If you were the lucky soul who won that auction for less than the grading fees, you will soon be the envy of investors everywhere. That 9.8 hasn't sold for less than $200 since the end of September, and a record-high of $335 was set in August.
Jupiter's Legacy is a sneaky one. So quietly has it become a profitable investment in the past year. Ever since Mark Millar's Millarworld was purchased by Netflix, speculators have been grabbing various #1s in hopes of turning a profit. If that's you, this may just be the one you're looking for since a Netflix series is currently in the works.
Up until the Netflix deal was announced, no one paid much attention to Jupiter's Legacy. Had you wanted a standard cover in a graded 9.8, you could have gotten one for no more than $17 and as little as $10. Once Netflix took interest, so did the rest of the collector's market...for a time. Since September, Jupiter's Legacy has cooled and the 12-month average has been $32. Even more eye-opening is that through mid-July, every 9.8 sold for less than $20.
Now things are starting to swing upward again. The past two sales have reached new highs for this issue, and the most recent purchase of $85 is the current record holder.
Another Millarworld title announced for the Netflix slate, Empress will be a feature film for the streaming service.
Like all the other Millarworld titles, this one spiked when the Netflix announcement was made, but its spike was so small that it was more of a blip. Now that we know Empress is coming to small screens, interest is going to pick up.
Last year, the 9.8 averaged $32, and it's doubled that. This year, there have been a modest five sales, but each of these has been for over $60. The last three sales have been for more than $70 each, but no 9.8 has traded hands on eBay since July.
