For years, Hake's has been a leader in collectibles outside of comics and has seen realized prices on vintage and antique trading cards, toys, and even political items. This month, Hake's has a number of unique and interesting finds in their September auction, with sessions ending September 17, 18, and 19.
Barbie Fashion #1 CGC Universal 9.0
Barbie Fashion #1 made its debut in 1991 with a striking cover by John Romita, and interior art by Anna Maria Cool. This was a straightforward comic that featured Barbie and her assorted friends in various fashion-related stories. This comic features a one-page ad for the short-lived Super Mario Bros Revlon hair care line, which was based on the Super Mario cartoon show.
This CGC blue label 9.0 features white pages, and while there is some wear on the cover, this book presents extremely well. The current fair market value for similar examples is $26, making this a very inexpensive collector's item for Barbie fans. While I don't see prices increasing on this book in the near future, if you're a Marvel, Barbie, or even John Romita collector, don't sleep on this book.
Godzilla #1 CGC Universal 9.0 Newsstand Edition
Marvel Comics' Godzilla had a hell of a run in the late 1970s. With a strong story by Doug Moench alongside Herb Trimpe and Jim Mooney art, this comic has become an underrated grail in recent years. The series would go on for only a few more years but has recently shot up in popularity. This was the first American comic appearance of the Japanese monster, with prices on higher grade blue, and signature series books, steadily climbing.
This CGC blue label 9.0 features white pages and a popping red cover. The current fair market value for other examples is $130, with prices starting to climb. This is a good time to buy this undervalued key as it could become one of those books that many will look back on and go "Wow, I wish I had bought this sooner".
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Sealed VHS VGA 85 NM+
My bias will be showing, but this is my favorite Vacation movie, as well as my favorite Christmas movie. Based on the John Hughes story "Christmas '59", Christmas Vacation is full of the Tom Foolery audiences had come to expect from a Vacation film.
This was also the last film role of Mae Questel, who portrayed Aunt Bethany in the movie. Questel is arguably best known for providing the voice work of Popeye's Olive Oil, and Betty Boop.
This sealed VHS has a VGA rating of 85 NM+ and presents well. I still have my original copy from the early 1990s, and it has been well-loved. While this may not be a sound investment piece (and that's alright), this is a unique and fun collector's item with a lot of history behind it.
If you're a fan of Christmas movies, or the Vacation series, this is a solid pickup for your collection.
