This week, Heritage is changing things up with their focused auctions and giving TCG collectors a wonderful Magic: The Gathering-focused auction. Fans and collectors alike will get a chance to bid on over 100 different and unique cards, ranging from common to rare. Included in the auction are several sealed M: TG booster boxes, giving you more of a chance to find that one card you may be dying to get! Here are a few of my pics for this week's focus auction.
Ancestral Recall - Limited Edition (Alpha)
If you're looking for something rare in this auction, this is it. This version of Ancestral Recall was released with the Limited Edition Alpa cards. The LEA Ancestral Recall only had a print one of 1,100, tho it's not as rare as the Beta edition card. This Ancestral Recall still commands serious money, graded or ungraded. The listed, median price for an ungraded card is $17,649.99. By comparison, a Beta version of the card is currently being offered at $78,000.
This green label CGC 3.5 Very Good + might not be an issue for some people, but this is a Qualified Label. Noted on the back is "Inked", which means it's a defect worth noting. While I personally don't think that's an issue (as it isn't restoration), if you're only interested in a blue-label card, don't overlook this one. Green label grades do tend to sell for less, meaning this card could be an affordable rare card for someone.
Magic: The Gathering Fourth Edition Sealed Booster Box
It seems as though sealed Fourth Edition booster boxes have become more readily available, which might not be great for investing reasons -- but if you're a collector, this is a great time to buy -- or is it? Prices tend to fluctuate on this specific sealed booster box but prices have been trending up. In March of 2022 a similarly sealed booster box sold for $840, and by December of 2022 another Fourth Edition sealed booster box sold for $1,320. In this week's TCG Weekly Auction (held on March 1) there's another sealed Fourth Edition Booster Box that has yet to break $600 at the time of writing.
I personally loved sealed booster boxes. They have the potential to be worth more than what you paid, but there's also no shame in keeping the box sealed. If you do go for this box as an investment piece, I would have onto it for a while. If you're looking to boost your personal collection, I would aim to spend less than $1300.
Magic: The Gathering Unlimited Booster Pack
After the Beta and Alpha series of Magic: The Gathering came the Unlimited series. This version sold extremely well, and for many of us, the Unlimited series is what likely got us into M: TG. This series included cards such as Armageddon, Badlands, and Gauntlet of Might.
This starter deck contains 60 cards, giving you a one-in-60 chance to find some rare gold. Heritage notes that while this box is sealed and in Excellent condition, it does have slightly blunted corners. As I've said before, these sealed packs, decks, and booster boxes can be a real treat for the right collector.
