Welcome back to this week's Weekly Auction Gem rundown! Each week we'll look at Heritage's weekly Sunday - Tuesday comic auction, their weekly video game auction, and their weekly poster auction to see which items should be on your radar!
Action Comics #373
This Giant Size issue of Action Comics #373 is a fun look at how Superman and Supergirl were portrayed during the Silver Age. This issue features several one-off stories featuring Kara, as well as the Superpets and the Superman Emergency Squad. The squad of tiny Superman first appeared in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #48. Curt Swan and Neal Adams provided the cover art, which is just fun to look at.
This CGC 9.4 has White pages and presents extremely well. The current fair market value of this book is $475, which I think is fair for the book. While long term this book may be a good investment, this is something you will need to hold onto.
Dell Giant Comics Christmas in Disneyland #1
Early Disneyland memorabilia can be highly collectible. Early maps, souvenirs, and Mickey ears can all command impressive prices in auctions. This copy of Dell Giant Comics Christmas in Disneyland is from 1957 -- two years after the now iconic theme park opened. Dell would feature Disneyland in a number of other comics, but this is one of the few that used a photocover of Cinderella Castle at Christmas time.
This is a unique look at how far the park has come in terms of celebrating the holiday. A single red tree stands tall in front of the castle. Compared to today where Disney goes all out for Christmas across every single park, it's rather charming. Carl Barks even has a story in this issue, making this a desirable piece for Disney Duck fans.
Heritage notes that this raw book is Fine/Very Fine Condition. In October 2022, Heritage sold a similar ungraded example for $84. By comparison, a CGC blue label 6.0 has a fair market value of $75. This could be an ideal and inexpensive book for the right collector.
Phantom 2040 Complete in Box WATA 9.6
Since 1936 Lee Falk's The Phantom has captured the imagination of kids and adults alike. The Ghost Who Walks became a popular pulp-era hero who would spawn a respectable multimedia franchise over his 87-year run. From serials to novels to the 1996 movie featuring Billy Zane as the titular character, this character has managed to stay relevant! In 1995 Viacom New Media released The Phantom 2040 for the Sega Genesis, the Super Nintendo, and the Game Gear. Based on the animated series of the same name this single-player action-adventure game received mostly positive reviews.
This complete in-box copy is WATA-graded 9.6 and still looks brand new with bright, bold colors. While there is no sales data for a CIB example, a sealed 9.6 has a fair market value of $510. This game could easily go for over $200 for the right, motivated collector.
King Kong Escapes Egyptian Poster
Toho's 1967 King Kong Escapes was the second King Kong movie the famous kaiju production company released, and it would also be the last time. If you like vintage kaiju films this movie is right up your alley. This movie featured King Kong, Mechani-Kong (a mechanical Kong), and Goroaurus, a dinosaur. This movie is downright fun thanks to the use of practical effects and costumes but pales in comparison to contemporary Godzilla films.
This 1967 Egyptian poster is downright beautiful. These posters present extremely well and should absolutely be displayed on your wall. Heritage notes that this game has general signs of wear but is overall in Very Fine condition.
