Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

World of Warcraft #3
Wildstorm Comics
Simonson, Lullabi & Hope

In this issue we transition from slave gladiators to escapees with some purpose. We get more creatures and a few more characters and locations. However, this issue really doesn’t explore much of the motives behind the three main characters. We only get one major plot movement by my estimation and it is so odd I don’t know what to make of it. Though entertaining, this issue is a bit of a step back, but I am not bailing out yet.

Rehgar, the Orc, leaves the gladiator pits a rich and happy man er Orc. He and his team are being tracked, though, by a mysterious man (yes a man). We learn that Rehgar is heading to Thunder Bluff to find a replacement for the elf, Valeera, that he sold at the end of the last issue. Broll and Lo’Gosh talk about what they will do and Broll mentions he had a daughter that reminds him of Valeera.

When the Rehgar crew arrives at Thunder Bluff we meet a few taurens. Seems like there is a minor revolution going on amidst them, but Rehgar only wants one tauren to replace Valeera. There seems to be more layers in this place that could end up being explored in terms of characters and politics. Lo’Gosh and Broll request to go into the Pools of Vision and are warned that an elemental is hanging out in there.

Elsewhere, Valeera is loaded onto a Wyvern, a winged lion basically, named Bristlefur. Wouldn’t you know it, she escapes and heads for Thunder Bluff.

In the Pools of Vision, Broll learns his daughter is, in fact, Valeera. I found this to be so bizarre. They are different species of elf. They hated each other. Despite their magical powers neither had an inkling that they were related? Well, actually Broll did, but he only decided to mention it after they were separated. Also, in the pools, Lo’Gosh “remembers” he had a wife and child. After confronting the elemental, they are showered with a grand dinner by some of the taurens. There, Lo’Gosh learns some of the legends behind his adopted name. He is presented with a feather. Lucky for him, the feather calls a Hippogryph, a flying thing, and Lo’Gosh and Broll escape.

Valeera is witness to the escape, as is Rehgar. Rehgar doesn’t really care because he made a fortune on these guys already. However, I would imagine he wasn’t thrilled with the development.

In all, not a bad issue. It moved quickly. It had some interesting subplots, but it seemed very uncreative. I mean, the tauren gives them a magic feather in front of Rehgar. What did he expect to happen? Did Reghar expect them just to keep the feather and look at it? Also, first Valeera and then Broll and Lo’Gosh escape almost the same way. Kind of convenient, no? Despite these oddities I did like the issue though and I am interested to see where it goes from here.

The artwork is a good as it gets. The more creatures that we see enter the mix, the more the artwork expands to fill in the gaps. It’s been solid so far and it helps move this along nicely.

I would like to see how this series shapes up. It has a big universe to utilize and I cant help but wonder if it will fall short in only using a small piece of it. As far as being entertained it got the job done.
