In a tribute to the recently departed Bob Barker, here's another blog entitled, "The Price is Right," where we'll review the asking price of major key issues and ask whether the "price is right?" This week, we'll take a look at CGC 9.8 copy of Invincible #1 signed by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. PWCC is asking for $3,000 (which includes the 20% buyer's premium), but is also considering offers for below that amount.

The first season of Invincible, which debuted two and a half years ago on Prime Video, was a hit with critics and fans alike scoring a 98% with critics and 92% with audiences. Invincible returns on November 4th for a four-episode first half of a second season. Amazon will release the second half of season two in 2024.

If the second season also turns out to be a hit, you can expect at least a jump in sales volume of Invincible's key issues, including his first full appearance in Invincible #1.

There are only 47 CGC 9.8 yellow label copies of Invincible #1 on the CGC Census.

PWCC's copy of Invincible #1 is rare for two reasons: (1) there are only 414 9.8 CGC graded copies of Invincible #1; and (2) among those 414, only 47 of them are signed by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. Compared to Ultimate Fallout #4, which I consider to be the most important key issue of the Modern Age (variants not included), Invincible #1 is extremely rare; specifically, there are 4,474 9.8 copies of Ultimate Fallout #4 on the CGC Census. In other words, if you want a 9.8 yellow label of Invincible #1, it's going to be REALLY hard to find someone who's willing to sell it.

This book is so rare, it's a little difficult to estimate its value. There are so few sales, there isn't much of a track record to analyze. That being said, there are a few reference points that we can consider. Let's first take a look at a standard blue label 9.8.

According to GoCollect, the FMV of a blue 9.8 is $3,500. The last three recorded sales of a blue label 9.8 all occurred in July 2023; each sold for $3,250. As you can see in the screenshot from GoCollect below, each of these sales are way off a 9.8's all-time high sale of $5,999 in September 2021 (an inflated sale due to the "comic boom"), but they are still nearly two times higher than what a 9.8 was selling for in late 2019 (roughly $1,800) just before the comic boom.

The last time there was a recorded, fixed-price sale of a yellow label 9.8 occurred in October 2020; it sold for $3,000. During that same month, a blue label 9.8 sold for $1,849. To at least one of these buyers, the value of Kirkman and Walker's signature was worth over $1,000.

Based on limited sales data, a 9.8 yellow label of Invincible #1 is probably worth at least $4,000.

Based on the limited sales data that we have, I estimate that a yellow label 9.8 is worth anywhere from $4,000 to $4,500 today. If the second season of Invincible is a hit, you can expect that range to climb closer to at least $5,000. PWCC's price seems right to me -- in fact, unless I'm missing something, it seems like a pretty good deal.
