There are certain things you'll hear over and over if you're in the business of comic collecting.  Over time, some of these mantras will begin to grate on your nerves... and for good reason.

Here's a list of the things that make my eye twitch every time I hear them. Remember - it's not only important to add books to your collection - it's important to do so in a way that doesn't put your family in the poorhouse.

1. "Buy what you like."

I am writing a  column about this because this is the number one mistake people make.  Emotions should never play a part in a financial transaction. PS, dealers love to hear collectors say that or "...that is one book I need for my collection." It translates to ca-ching!

2. "Comic Books are overpriced."

Many books are over priced, but even more are well below their actual value.  The problem is that people follow the crowd.  Be a leader instead of a follower sometimes is a great trait.

Leaders need intel though so read and then evaluate that information to see what is good advice and what is fool's gold.  The path less traveled offers some great values.

3. "I don't sell my books because I am a collector."

Another column for the future.   I would very much like to meet these wealthy individuals with unlimited financial resources who can purchase all the books they want to add to their collections without ever having to liquidate a comic.  Oh, the mansions they must live in.

4. "I am glad all those speculators have left the hobby."

These people are part of the hobby that is needed for it to thrive.  They should not be the most voluminous, but they are still a necessary component.  They buy books at a greater frequency and keep local comic stores and vendors in business.  When they leave so too does a large sum of money spent on the hobby.

These financial resources are sometimes necessary for publishers, retailers, and others to survive.  Back in the 90s when a large number left, so too did LCS diminish in numbers while publishers imploded.  Some of these companies brought us the Crow, Ultraforce, and Night Man.  All media properties that increased the number in the hobby.

5. "This hobby will be around forever."

This is an egotistical belief that borders on the hubris of the community.  The hobby needs young blood and everyone in the community must do their part to help.  Conventions attract young fans with celebrities but also comic books.

Stores in Michigan like Gotham Night Comics and State of Comics bring innovation in their displays and marketing to attract this desired demographic.

6. "There is nothing I can do to help the hobby."

Older fans hand out comics for Halloween.  Used Graphic Novels can be donated to libraries to give young readers more choices.  Many people take it for granted that collecting comics will be around forever because of their passion for the hobby.

That is one disease that should be spread so that it infects a new generation of fans.  The hobby needs it.

The greatest gift we can receive is to have the chance, just once in our lives, to make a difference. Do you understand how many times you made a difference? Enough for a hundred lifetimes.” – Doctor Strange speaking to Peter Parker.
