The monthly Top 10 CGC Submissions is a curated list of comics (and magazines) that have been submitted the most often to CGC during any given month. CGCData.com pulls the data straight from CGC over the past 30 days.

For the month of July 2025, we see a new comic take the No. 1 position: Spider-Man #1 (1990). While collectors frequently submit this book for grading, it's rarely in the monthly Top 10 and has never taken the No. 1 spot since I've covered information provided by CGCData.com. The Silver Edition variant took the No. 8 spot last month as well.

Without further ado, here are the Top 10 CGC submissions during the month of July:

1. Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1990);

2. Action Comics Superman Day Special Edition #1 Comic Mint Gold Foil Edition (DC, 2025);

3. Wolverine Limited Series #1 (Marvel, 1982);

4. X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1991);

5. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 (Marvel, 1984);

6. Amazing Spider-Man #300 (Marvel, 1988);

7. Amazing Spider-Man #1 Ross Variant Cover A (Marvel, 2025);

8. Spider-Man #1 Silver Edition (Marvel, 1990);

9. Amazing Spider-Man #61 Young Variant Cover (Marvel, 2025); and

10. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time #1 Convention Edition (Marvel, 2025).

To get ready for SDCC, collectors submitted nearly 1,300 copies of Spider-Man #1 during the month of July.

It comes as no surprise that collectors have frequently submitted this issue to CGC for grading over the years. Not only was this issue Todd McFarlane’s first issue as writer and artist on his own Spider-Man title, but it also sold over 2.5 million copies, making it one of the best-selling comic books of all time. It was also one of the first comic books that had multiple variant covers, a marketing tactic that has become commonplace today. It fueled a speculator boom where many issues were purchased for investment purposes (i.e., they were bagged and boarded immediately and never read) resulting a in a glut of high-grade copies even 35 years later.

It's a cover that is also iconic and frequently homaged:

For these reasons, collectors had submitted 14,491 copies of this issue to CGC for grading prior to July 2025. In spite of this issue's popularity, we saw a historic surge in submissions for this issue last month. Just last month alone, collectors submitted 1,264 copies to CGC (or an +8.7% increase).

The reason for this submission surge was, of course, a CGC private signing with Todd McFarlane that was held at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) in late July. McFarlane was busy at SDCC including two collaborations with CGC for an official CGC Private Signing event and an exclusive variant release related to the 50th issues of King Spawn, Gunslinger, and The Scorched.

Of all of McFarlane's major key issues, it's interesting to see that many collectors chose Spider-Man #1 for his signature. It also likely explains why the Silver Edition variant also cracked the Top 10 last month.

Fantastic Four: First Steps had no discernible impact on CGC submissions.

We've been observing the impact of James Gunn's Superman movie on CGC submissions recently including Action Comics Superman Day Special Edition #1 taking the No. 2 spot in July (and two Superman-related books in the Top 10 last month). On the other hand, I personally couldn't see any impact that Fantastic Four: First Steps may have had on CGC submissions in recent months. During the month of July, the first Fantastic Four book that appears is Fantastic Four #49 (first full appearance of Galactus) at the No. 82 spot. The first non-Silver Age book that appears is Fantastic Four #112 (1971) all the way down at No. 410. Still, in terms of sales volume, both Fantastic Four #48 and #49 did make GoCollect's Hottest Comics over the past 30 days.

Could this mean there's lack of excitement among comic book collectors for the film? Or perhaps it means nothing at all?
