Welcome back to this week's top pics from Heritage's weekly comic book auctions! Heritage holds weekly funny book auctions that feature key issues, overlooked comics, oddball memorabilia items, and more. These auctions are a must if you want to beef up your collection! Here are my top picks for you to watch.
Munsters #1 CGC Universal 5.0
Everyone's favorite family from 1313 Mockingbird Lane had a potential run-in with the Comics Code Authority when Gold Key opted for the TV show to become a comic series. At the time, the CCA banned certain horror icons such as werewolves and vampires. Gold Key was able to avoid that as they were not a part of the larger Comics Magazine Association of America, which enforced the CCA on publishers who were a part of the group. As such, Lilly, Grandpa, and Eddie were able to appear in the comic. While it would be fun to imagine a Munster comic without most of the key cast, we're all the better for that not happening!
According to our database, CGC has only graded 136 copies of this book. The current Fair Market Value is only at $200 for a CGC Universal 5.0, making this an affordable minor key. It's noted that this book has Off-White to White pages, and the cover presents extremely well!
The Eye Special #1 CGC Universal 8.5
It's not every day that something truly unique pops up in an auction. In this case, Biljo White's The Eye Special #1 is such a book. White was a part of the fanzine boom in the 1960s. As a self-taught artist, White may not have been able to break into the major two companies, but he was still able to live out the dream of making comics. White created a number of heroes inspired by the Golden Age character he grew up with, but The Eye was the only one (that we know of) to get its own special. The Eye has seen publication since 1965, but he is still a somewhat obscure hero.
This CGC Universal 8.5 features white pages and a bright, bold cover. This comic doesn't appear too often, so we currently do not have any data on this book. This is the first time Heritage has offered a copy, so I expect this to be the sleeper hit of this auction!
This Magazine is Haunted #14 CGC Universal 2.5
Sometimes, a comic cover will come along that's so over the top that it's funny. This is such a cover. Without a doubt, the Comics Code Authority would have exploded if a book like this was published during its time- and this book was published in 1953, mere months before the CCA was born! This comic is incredible because of this cover. A blazing skull, a creepy bat, a damned human, and the eerie Dr. Death, this comic wanted to go out in style. Judging by the wear on the book it was well loved, so whomever owned it probably got their monies worth!
According to our database, only 58 total copies of this book have been graded. As this is a 2.5, 49 copies have been graded higher. However, there is no recent sales data for a 2.5 copy. Currently, a 3.0 copy has a Fair Market Value of $1,000 with prices trending up. This book could surprise us all with its final price.
