Collectors Comics Spring Featured Auction finished on May 14 with hundreds of comics from the Golden Age to the present selling. Let’s review the highlights.
Batman Old and New Sell Well
Many Batman comics were put up for sale in Collectors Comics’ most recent auction. One of the premier books in the auction was a 6.0 graded copy of Batman #17, published in 1943. It sold for $2,222, setting a record in the grade.
The previous 6.0 grade record holder was one sold in a 2020 Heritage auction for $1,380.
Batman: Harley Quinn
On the modern side, a 9.8 graded copy of Batman: Harley Quinn #1 sold for $725. While not a record, it does mark a reversal of a downward trend that had reached as low as $528 in a May 9 Heritage auction. With Lady Gaga poised to play Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie a Deux, releasing in 2024, keep an eye on this book.
Huge Amazing Spider-Man Collection Sold
With more than 260 individual issues of Amazing Spider-Man offered in the auction, two stood out. The first was a 7.5 graded copy of Amazing Spider-Man #14 – the first appearance of the Green Goblin – selling for $5,113. This comic in this grade had steeply plummeted in value in the April 18 Heritage auction, where it sold for $4,080.
The sale in the Collectors Comics auction is still slightly below the one-year average of $5,188 but gives some hope that values won’t continue to drop precipitously.
The other standout was a 9.6 graded signature series copy of Amazing Spider-Man #238. That one sold for $1,429, marking a significant bump up from the one-year and 90-day averages of $841 paid for a signed copy in this grade.
Other Auction Highlights
A 9.4 graded signature series copy of Incredible Hulk #340 came in at $1,461 when the gavel dropped.
Signed by Todd McFarlane, Stan Lee, Herb Trimpe, Len Wein, John Romita, Gerry Conway, and Dick Ayers, the book was one of the top sellers among the huge number of signature series comics selling in the auction.
A CBCS 9.8 graded copy of the newsstand edition of New Mutants #98 – the first appearance of Deadpool – sold for $2,081. CBCS graded 9.8s were flirting with becoming three-figure books, dropping as low as $1,009 in a November 2022 eBay auction. Since then, it’s been a slow and steady climb back up, marked by this giant leap.
As we get closer to Deadpool 3, expect a continued climb for New Mutants #98, although it’s still a long way away from peak 2021 prices.
One of the highlights of the auction prior to the beginning bid was a 7.0 graded copy of Marvel Mystery Comics #19. The freaky Alex Schomburg cover alone was enough to draw in bidders. The final sale price was $4,000. While a record in the grade, it’s been nearly eight years since the previous recorded sale of a 7.0 for $2,032 in a 2015 Heritage auction.
A more apt comparison would be the $5,175 final bid for a 6.0 graded copy in the December 2022 ComicConnect auction. It looks like the final bidder in Collectors Comics’ Spring Auction got a tremendous deal.
