Comic Auctions: Results

2021 August 22-23 Comic Books Select Auction #122134 at Heritage -

Here are the top three highest sellers at Heritage's most recent weekly auction!

Detective Comics #31 (DC, 1939) CGC FR 1.0 Cream to off-white pages. This book features the first appearances of the Batplane, the Batarang, Julie Madison, and Batman's first super-powered foe, the Monk. Even with a completely detached cover and tape stains on the spine and interior cover, this item still brought in an impressive $48,000.

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC Apparent GD/VG 3.0 Slight (C-1) Off-white to white pages.  This restored origin and first appearance of Spider-Man brought in $24,000 at auction.  With only a slight color adjustment made to the front cover, the purple label didn't hamper this book's haul.

Daredevil #1 (Marvel, 1964) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. The origin and first appearance of Daredevil, and the first appearances of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson brought in $19.800. This exceeds the most recent sale of this book at a Heritage auction by almost $2000.

Upcoming & Current

ComicConnect's Event Auction Session 2 has 6 Days to Go: ComicConnect's latest offering, featuring original art, memorabilia, and comics (with plenty of Absolute Carnage and Amazing Spider-Man) is currently running, with six days left to bid.

This auction features its fair share of heavy hitters. Sitting at the top of the bidding mountain is a CGC 8.0 VF copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, which is currently sitting at a high bid of $230,000 after 16 bids. While this book is an obvious dynamo at auction, we have not seen this grade show up on the block for over a year, when one sold for $180,000 at Heritage. Given that we're already close to doubling that with a few days left for bidding, where do you think this one will end up? There are two other copies of Amazing Fantasy #15 in this auction - a 5.0 with a current bid of $40,000 and a 3.5 with a high bid of $26,000.

Also worth watching is an All-Star Comics #8 CGC VG: 4.0. Only 187 copies of this book are recorded on the census, making this highly desirable book with its off-white to white pages all the more exciting.

This 1942 book gave the world the first appearance of Wonder Woman in an eight-page story toward the back written by William Moulton Marston under the pen name of "Charles Moulton". The insert story was included to test reader's interest in the Wonder Woman concept and, needless to say, it was a hit. That same issue saw the induction of Doctor Mid-Nite and Starman as members of the Justice Society as well.

At the time of this writing, this book has a high bid of $24,000 after 20 bids. This number is definitely expected to go up, as the three most recent sales of this grade have landed at $34,800 (11/22/20, Heritage), $29,000 (8/25/20, ComicConnect), and  $31,200 (7/12/20, Heritage).

ComicLink Featured Auction Ends Soon - You still have until August 26th to bid in ComicLink's currently-running comic auction, which features books from all ages and labels.

Golden Age fans might be interested in a CGC 7.5 VF Zip Comics #1, which has a current high bid of $2,528 after 38 bids. This 1940 book features the first appearance & origin of Steel Sterling. There are only 10 books in the CGC census graded higher or equal to this one, making it a read rarity for collectors.

Young Avengers #1 variant (CGC graded 9.8 NM/MT) will satisfy those looking for modern books to bid on. This Wizard World Los Angeles Edition is currently resting on a high bid of $858. You won't find a higher-graded book in the CGC Census. Sales for this book are in the midst of an almost 100% increase compared to this time last year.

August 26 Certified Modern Age Comic Auction at Heritage

Bidding is currently underway at Heritage Auctions’ Modern Age Showcase, offering tons of books of interest to the era’s collectors.

Spawn #1 Color Error (Image, 1992) CGC Qualified NM/MT 9.8 White pageslf?set=path[2%2F4%2F3%2F3%2F5%2F24335199]%2Csizedata[425x425]&call=url[file%3Aproduct Comic Auction Updates 8/17/21: Batman Keys at ComicConnect
Yes, this book features a dreaded Qualified CGC label, that’s true. BUT, with fewer than 200 known copies of Spawn #1 “Color Error” out there, this is a real rarity. Due to the low number of copies, CGC does not consider it a “variant” issue and will not slab it in a blue label holder.

It may not be the biggest moneymaker, with sales commonly hitting between $250 and $450, but it’s worth adding to your collection if you’re a Spawn fan and you want a piece few other people can brag about owning.
