A recent Emma Stone Instagram pic is inspiring Spider-Gwen theories galore, but should collectors actually be looking in a different direction?

The Spider-Verse movies have cemented Gwen Stacy as a full-fledged movie star. Sure, Emma Stone brought her to life in the live-action The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but Gwen became a superhero in the two Spider-Verse flicks. As much as fans have loved seeing her in animated form, audiences are clamoring for her to arrive in live action. Stone’s recent selfie post has sparked plenty of theories pointing at just that, and there’s no denying the new hairstyle has the Spider-Gwen look.

After Spider-Man: No Way Home, the live-action Spider-Verse has landed. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield famously reprised their respective Peter Parkers from the earlier Sony films. Although we didn’t see Gwen, she was referenced in No Way Home. Since the Multiverse has been blasted wide open, it would be easy enough for Stone to return to the Spider-Verse with superpowers of her own. Couple that with Stone’s picture, and buyers will be heading straight to eBay for those Spider-Gwen keys.

The easiest assumption is that Stone will play Spider-Gwen, but that may not be the case. Yes, Sony is producing a Spider-Woman movie, but it will be animated. While Spider-Gwen would be a welcome addition to the MCU, Marvel Studios has yet to announce a fourth Spider-Man film. Where would that leave Stone? It could be that she is preparing to bring an unexpected role in Deadpool 3.

We know that the movie’s plot will focus on the Multiverse and the TVA, and there’s no way Ryan Reynolds will miss the opportunity to introduce Deadpool variants. That could lead to Stone making a surprise appearance as Gwenpool.

Who is Gwenpool? She’s not exactly a version of Gwen Stacy. Instead, she’s Gwen Poole from Earth-TRN565, a high school dropout who wanted to be a superhero. When she had her costume made, the designer mistook her name as Gwenpool, and the character was born. She later gained the powers to travel through time and break the fourth wall, and she even joined the West Coast Avengers in 2018. That has Deadpool 3 written all over it.

All that being said, it could be time to track down Gwenpool’s key issues.

DEADPOOL’S SECRET WARS #2 GWENPOOL VARIANT

The first time readers met Gwenpool was on the cover of this 2015 variant. With Spider-Gwen’s popularity, Marvel commissioned a series of Gwen mashups. Artists imagined her as versions of several characters, including Doctor Strange and Groot. However, it was her combination with Deadpool that was given the royal treatment.

She didn’t appear in the story, but it still counts as a first appearance, and that makes it the collecting priority.

HOWARD THE DUCK #1

The following year, Marvel was ready to bring Gwenpool into the comics universe. Fittingly, she was included in a new Howard the Duck series, a character known for breaking the fourth wall. That makes this her in-story first appearance, which is well worth adding to your shopping lists.

Since it arrived on shelves after Deadpool’s Secret Wars #2, Howard the Duck #1 takes a backseat in terms of collecting.

UNBELIEVABLE GWENPOOL #1

Shortly after Gwenpool arrived in Howard the Duck #1, the editorial staff decided to give her a starring role in Unbelievable Gwenpool #1. Nabbing those first self-titled comics is a must for character collecting. To complete your sets, you’ll want to add this to your long boxes.

JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS

By no means does Emma Stone’s selfie confirm anything about her MCU future. Most likely, there is a reasonable explanation. Since the Screen Actors Guild strike has shut down virtually all film productions, she may not be preparing for a movie role at the moment. For that matter, her new hair could be in preparation for a stage production.

It could be that she is simply trying out a different hairstyle for her own enjoyment. But where’s the fun in that?
