Nathan Fillion has been cast as “a Green Lantern” for Superman: Legacy, but which one is he playing? While all signs may point toward Guy Gardner, he could be suiting up as one of two other GL icons.

James Gunn has stirred the pot once again. Shortly after DC Studios went public with its Superman and Lois castings, the writer/director announced that we’ll also see Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern in Superman: Legacy. However, Gunn has yet to reveal Fillion’s exact role. After all, there are thousands of Green Lanterns in the comics, leaving so many options on the table.

Vanity Fair and most other major news outlets believe Fillion will play the brash and quick-tempered Guy Gardner. That would make for a fan-favorite choice and fit Gunn’s usual action-comedy stylings, but the DC Studios co-chair has said that Legacy will not be another Guardians of the Galaxy type of movie. That suggests he has a different Green Lantern in mind for Fillion.

GREEN LANTERN #59

This has been a popular addition to any Silver Age DC collection. There’s been talk of Guy Garnder coming to live action for years dating back to Geoff Johns’ first mentions of a Green Lantern Corps show on HBO Max. Before DC Studios’ leadership change, many believed Guy would be a central figure in that series. Earlier this year, Gunn included Lanterns in his Chapter One announcement, adding that it would star Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

With those two seemingly getting their debuts on Max, the logical choice for Superman: Legacy’s Green Lantern would be Guy. That would make owning his first appearance in Green Lantern #59 a top priority. As recently as July 12, a graded 8.5 sold for nearly $1k, so don’t think you’ll get one for cheap.

FLASH #129

Granted, Fillion has perfected the charmingly arrogant demeanor that defines Guy Gardner, but there are other Lanterns that would suit the actor’s talent. Maybe not as fun a choice as Guy, but Fillion would make for a great Alan Scott.

The original Green Lantern, his powers were based in magic when he debuted in the Golden Age, thus making his early appearances astronomical investments. Instead, take a look at his first Silver Age comic from 1962, Flash #129. Instead of doling out thousands of dollars for the lowest of grades, you can have up to a 9.0 for about $500 or less.

GREEN LANTERN #10 (2006)

Here’s an interesting casting choice for Fillion: Sinestro. While audiences tend to link the actor to more comedic roles, he could excel as the narcissistic villain. What’s more, establishing the Corps’ most famous villain in Superman: Legacy would feed directly into the upcoming Lanterns. After all, Sinestro was a Green Lantern before his fall from grace. We could see the character as more of an anti-hero in Legacy, thus setting the stage for his villainous descent in Lanterns.

As far as collecting, Sinestro first appeared in 1961’s Green Lantern #7, an issue that will cost you at least $300 for a low-grade 1.0. The cheaper option with a huge upside is Green Lantern #10 from 2006. Here you have the first appearance of the Sinestro Corps, which would give rise to the character’s more famous Yellow Lantern persona. You also get the bonus debuts of Arkillo, Manticore, and Sandstorm, all of whom could later appear in live-action.

The last time a graded 9.8 sold online, it brought $90 last July.
