How much does a CGC-graded copy of TOTK sell for? PWCC has a CGC 9.8 copy for sale this week in their weekly auction ending on August 6th. Let's take a closer look at the value of this game.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK) took the gaming world by storm. Already hailed as one of the best video games of all time (and the fastest-selling Zelda game of all time), TOTK received a Metascore of 96  based on 145 reviews. My blogging colleague, Matt Tuck, speculated that The Legend of Zelda could receive a film based upon the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this summer.

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom CGC 9.8 A++ Sealed

With two days remaining, the current bid for this sealed CGC 9.8 copy of TOTK is $105. Considering that this game was released just a few months ago and that a brand new copy of TOTK currently sells for $56.90 on Amazon, you might be surprised that there are already graded copies on the market and that bidding has already surpassed $100.

But the market demand for 9.8 copies of this game exists. Looking at eBay right now, there are already 12 other 9.8s for sale and one 9.6. More importantly, a whopping 58 9.8s have sold on eBay since May 25th. The vast majority of these 9.8s sold in the $200 to $290 range, including the three recent sales captured in the screenshot below:

Looking at these recent sales, the current bid on PWCC for a 9.8 looks like it could be a great deal.

A 9.8 sold for $137.50 on August 3rd: Is this the beginning of a new trend or is it an outlier?

One very recent sale on August 3rd for $137.50, however, gives me pause about whether TOTK can sustain these values. After a string of sales on eBay that often exceeded $200, this most recent sale of a 9.8 represents a significant drop in value.

The question is whether this is the beginning of a new trend or was it an outlier? While I'm not concerned about just one sale, there are some reasons to speculate that this could be the beginning of a new downward trend for TOTK. For instance, because Nintendo released this game in May, there hasn't been much time for investors to send copies to CGC for grading.

Accordingly, there were very few graded copies on eBay or on the CGC Census just a month or two ago. However, now that CGC has had more time to grade and turn around these submissions, it's reasonable to believe that we may see a glut of 9.8s on eBay in the near future creating a situation where supply outstrips demand. The August 3rd sale for $137.50 could serve a leading indicator of a potential downward trend.
