Ryan Reynolds may be on strike as an actor, but he’s still making moves as a producer. His latest move will have you taking a closer look at an obscure first appearance.
The writers' and actors’ strike may have hit pause on Deadpool 3’s production, but don’t think Reynolds isn’t hard at work. Days ago, he announced that his company, Maximum Effort, is co-producing the reboot for Biker Mice From Mars. If that doesn’t sound weird enough to be a Reynolds-type of project, what does?
If you were born after 2000, you might not have heard of this one. The concept is exactly like it sounds. There are three mice from Mars who are also bikers. Aptly named Throttle, Modo, and Vinnie, they are the last survivors of a war with the Plutarkians. No surprise, those Plutarkians are ready to conquer Earth, but the Biker Mice are there to protect their new home. Welcome to 1990s cartoons.
Although it wasn’t the most popular kids’ show, Biker Mice ran from 1993 to 1996. Only three years earlier, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had hit their first peak in popularity with the live-action movie. As TMNT’s appeal began to dwindle, other studios were ready to grab that audience. So it was that Fox got on the bandwagon with Biker Mice From Mars.
Of course, Biker Mice didn’t exactly steal the Ninja Turtles’ thunder, and the off-brand TMNT fell into obscurity. Like Battle Toads, Biker Mice found a cult following, and that has likely pushed it back into the spotlight.
No doubt TMNT’s latest big screen reboot is an influencing factor for Reynolds and company to resurrect the Biker Mice. That will have buyers looking out for one particular comic.
BIKER MICE FROM MARS #1 DIRECT EDITION
In conjunction with the show’s debut, Marvel published a three-issue limited series of the same name. As such, Biker Mice #1 features the cartoon’s main characters in their first comic book appearance. If you haven’t dug through your long boxes for this issue, the recent prices will give you plenty of incentive.
For the past two years, the graded 9.8 has been earning impressive values. In 2021, it earned as much as $200. When the first rumors of a Biker Mice reboot began swirling earlier this year, prices took a dramatic turn. From January to March, that same 9.8 sold for as much as $280 and no less than $225. T
he most recent sale was in May when a copy brought $111, but the Ryan Reynolds news should give that FMV a quick boost.
BIKER MICE FROM MARS #1 NEWSSTAND EDITION
As you dust off your Biker Mice From Mars comics, see if you have the first issue in the newsstand edition. There are no recorded sales for any graded 9.8s, but a 9.6 traded hands in February to the tune of $175. For comparison, the 9.6 direct edition last sold for $100, though it has earned as much as $162 since last year.
A BIKER MICE RENAISSANCE
Exactly how much involvement Reynolds will have in the project is unclear, but the Biker Mice reboot with his name attached has potential. He’s not known for his G-rated content, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the reboot get an Adult Swim-type of makeover. That could make for an outrageously hilarious show that would be better suited for a Hulu release rather than Disney Plus.
