This 4th of July we will eat tri-tip, drink beer, and hang out in front of our garage. Our entertainment? Watching the neighbor almost blow up the block with illegal fireworks. It's the Fourth man, celebrate! It is also the opening week for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Yep, Tom Holland the latest and greatest version of Spider-Man will be swinging into your 4th of July celebration. What books should we buy or short into the 23rd Marvel Cinematic Universe (Phase 3) movie Spider-Man: Far From Home?

Amazing Spider-Man #20

About two years ago this was the hot comic at the time, with lots of media gossip about Scorpion appearing in the next Spidey movie. This character was created by Stan Lee (script) and Steve Ditko (art) in 1965. The Amazing Spider-Man #20 is the first appearance of the Scorpion and the character was even hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Vulture, admirably played by Michael Keaton, refuses to admit what Spider-Man's real identity might be. The fellow inmate asking him is none other than Mac Gargan threatening to give "Spider-Man a surprise party" with some of his thug friends. Mac Gargan is the Scorpion's alter ego and the version created by Stan and Steve.

Anti-Catalyst

By now many of you have heard that we will not be seeing Scorpion in this latest Spidey movie. Who knows when he will appear in the MCU? No, that is not bottle rockets you hear outside your window. That is the sound of your investment in Amazing Spider-Man #20 plummeting to earth in a fiery crash. How bad was this investment decision in hindsight? Should we buy, sell, or hold?

Amazing Spider-Man #20

Short-Term (Less than 60 days)

  • Grade 7.5 $1100 FMV returns positive +22.9%
  • Grade 6.5 $650 FMV returns positive +17.2%
  • Grade 6.0 $575 FMV returns positive +11.6%
  • Grade 4.0 $325 FMV returns positive +17.7%
  • Grade 2.0 $250 actual sale eBay returns positive +77.4% long-term

The good news is that this comic shows resilience, like only Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) can provide. It is simply old, iconic and still advancing in price to the tune of about roughly +17% every 60 days. Scorpion is crawling toward a profit. My recommendation is to hold onto Amazing Spider-Man #20. After all it has a great return and eventually; this guy, Scorpion will sting the big screen.

Amazing Spider-Man #13

Another possible speculation is the first appearance of Mysterio (the actual villain in the movie Spidey: Far From Home). An amazing actor, Jake Gyllenhaal is playing Mysterio in this movie. This fishbowl villain first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #13 and boy is that book on a tear. Currently, #11 of the top twenty Bronze Age books last month per GoCollect. Additionally, the short-term looks very positive, take a look.

 Amazing Spider-Man #13

Short-Term (Less than 60 Days)

  • Grade 7.0 $2100 FMV returns negative -5.2%
  • Grade 6.0 $1500 FMV returns positive +11.8%
  • Grade 5.0 $1150 FMV returns positive +20.7%
  • Grade 3.0 $600 FMV returns positive +13.7%

Mysterio certainly has the speculation crowd doing a double take. These are great numbers despite the movie about to drop. Almost as if the short-term build up to the movie has continued to push prices for Amazing Spider-Man #13 up. This is probably a case of Spidey magic protecting this book from a significant drop in profit. If you own; then hold onto it. Even if something happens to this Mysterio he has been reincarnated more times than Rambo.
