STAMP COLLECTING HISTORY - MODERN STYLE!

In October 2024, VeVe made history by introducing the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, the 1840 Penny Black, as a digital collectible in collaboration with Stanley Gibbons, the oldest stamp dealer in the world.

Now, VeVe is expanding this groundbreaking venture with the release of the Penny Red, the iconic successor to the Penny Black, as a 3D digital collectible. This drop, set for July 20, 2025, at 8 AM PST, marks another milestone in blending traditional philately with modern digital collecting.

A LITTLE STAMP STYLE HISTORY:

The Penny Red, first issued in 1841, addressed a critical flaw in the Penny Black: its red cancellation marks were too easy to wash off, enabling fraudulent reuse. By switching to a red-brown stamp with black cancellations, the Penny Red became a cornerstone of postal history, with approximately 21 billion printed over its 38 year run.

Its enduring appeal lies in its varieties, from rare Plate 77 stamps, valued up to £495,000 for their scarcity, to vibrant “Rainbow Trial” stamps tested for anti-forgery measures.

On VeVe, the Penny Red drop offers collectors a range of editions, from a single stamp to an impressive block of thirty, all rendered in stunning 3D detail. This follows the Penny Black’s successful digital debut, which included a “phygital” component: 150 secret-rare Penny Black digital collectibles came with an original 1840 physical stamp in a VeVe-exclusive case.

Stanley Gibbons, established in 1856 and holder of a Royal Warrant since 1914, brings unmatched expertise to this project. Their commitment to modernizing philately through VeVe opens the hobby to a new generation, merging the tactile allure of stamps with blockchain-backed digital ownership. Collectors can explore this drop via the VeVe app, where the Penny Red’s rich history, from its role in revolutionizing global communication to its collectible rarity comes alive.

Personally, I was never that big of a stamp collector…until that one day during my grade school summer holiday, staying at my grandparents house, where my grandpa brought out his quite sizable collection.  He served on a Destroyer in the Royal Canadian Navy, which took him to countries all around the world where he picked up stamps & coins from their visited ports.

As a pre-teen kid, it was fun for me to share his excitement and notice the ‘fun pictures,’ but get this - 40+ years later, I still own that collection that will be passed down to my kids, so yes - I do also own a lot of digital stamps through the VeVe app now too!

(Astute Edition-Number hunters might notice I’ve collected a few related to their ‘2024 FA’ Drop Year!)
