As we reach the end of yet another year (Goodbye 2018, we hardly knew you), it’s fun to try and predict what the most sought after comics of 2019 will look like.
Which books will rise in value? Which will fall? Which will see the sharpest increases?
Remember a comic book that’s already sky-high in value and goes up slightly is not as good of an investment as currently undervalued books that have greater potential to generate more growth and therefore see even bigger returns.
It is with these considerations in mind that I’m picking my top three books for 2019. If I’m ignoring what seem like books that are sure to increase in popularity and value, like Marvel Special Edition #15, Shazam #1, Fantastic Four #48 and Nova #1, it is also for the same reason: these books are already at a high points in terms of value, historically and economically speaking.
Sure, they can all go up higher, but in 2019 there might be even better investment opportunities waiting.
What would those be?
I'm glad you asked.
Wonder Woman v2 #7 (August 1987) - First appearance of Barbara Ann Minerva (New Earth Cheetah)
At some point in 2019, perhaps very soon, the trailer for 'Wonder Woman 1984' will drop. When that happens and especially if the trailer is Cheetah-centric, this comic should see a spike. This is issue #7 in the George Perez post-Crisis reboot of the Wonder Woman mythos. This book is showing gradual growth, but, as a look at the numbers reveals, is still affordable:
9.8 FMV = $190.00
9.6 FMV = $70.00
9.4 FMV = $48.00
9.2 FMV = $46.00
Plenty of room for growth and if Cheetah is as big a success with audiences as Black Manta was in the recent 'Aquaman' film, returns could soar.
The Savage She-Hulk #1 (February 1980) - Origin of She-Hulk; First appearance of She-Hulk
2017 and 2018 already saw a rise in value for comics featuring female super-heroes. There was the first 'Wonder Woman' film which was answered by Marvel with the hype surrounding Ms. / Captain Marvel. Now another Wonder Woman film, as mentioned above. How will Marvel follow that if it’s a success? Perhaps 2019 will see the rise of another Marvel female hero, this time of the Green persuasion. She-Hulk #1 marks the premiere of Jennifer Walters as a female version of the Hulk. Although she had not one but two standalone series, and she was even a member of the Fantastic Four for a while, there’s been a distinct lack of love shown to this strong Green Lady.
I think this may be due for a correction starting in 2019. Of course a movie appearance would certainly speed things along. As it stands this comic has seen respectable growth but has plenty of room to grow some more. Current Prices in higher grades (certified status) are as follows:
9.8 FMV = $325.00
9.6 FMV = $140.00
9.4 FMV = $100.00
9.2 FMV = $85.00
The last three sales of 9.8 copies were for: $350.99 (12/25/2018 on eBay), $300.00 (12/25/2018 on eBay) and $325.00 (12/23/2018).
Strange Tales #169 (September 1973) - First Brother Voodoo
Finally, I’m going to double down, reinforcing what I said already (see here) that this is among the better investments for 2019. The second 'Doctor Strange' movie will most likely begin filming in 2019 (see here). A character that only die hard Marvel fans may have noticed in the first 'Doctor Strange' movie was Daniel Drumm, played there by Mark Anthony Brighton. As I wrote in my previous post, it’s possible that Birghton will be brought back to play Daniel’s twin brother Jericho, better known as Brother Voodoo. To clarify, I don't think there will be a Brother Voodoo standalone film any time soon. Rather, Brother Voodoo may appear in the second Doctor Strange film and in this way enter the MCU.
In higher grades, the current value of this comic on the market looks as follows:
9.8 FMV = $3,100.00
9.6 FMV = $850.00
9.4 FMV = $550.00
9.2 FMV = $350.00
Much higher prices than are currently had by the first two books, but this is an early Bronze Age key comic and one of the last that hasn't seriously spiked already. Houngan Magic won’t be necessary to push Jericho Drumm to profits, just the tide gradually lifting Marvel Bronze Age keys month after month.
****Edit 12/30/2018: She-Hulk's alter-ego is 'Jennifer Walters', not 'Jessica' as I originally wrote. Thanks to Andre Jeremiah for spotting the mistake!
