Collectors paid their own tributes to John Romita Sr. with several of his more famous comics trending on eBay this week.
It’s time to dig deeper into the Hottest Comics. Sure, the top 10 are the flashier picks of the index, but there’s always something interesting to find when you get toward the bottom. Remember, the Hottest Comics are the 100 best-selling single issues across eBay. The rankings are based on sales volume. While those fair market values may be the deciding factor in your buying habits, this list is all about the number of copies being sold rather than the sticker price.
83. #39 (NEW TO THE LIST)
The comic book community lost arguably the most important and beloved Spider-Man artist, John Romita Sr. From his first official day on the job, JRSR had big shoes to fill when Spidey co-creator Steve Ditko left Marvel after 38 issues. Romita took up pencil duties with ASM #39, and he created comic history in the process.
His work stands as the model by which all other Spider-Man artists are judged, and his art continues to inspire fans. It was only fitting that ASM #39 with its iconic cover reached the Hottest Comics this week.
60. BATMAN #655 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Those Damian Wayne appearances were all the rage…for a couple of months earlier this year. Then his key issues began to dip. The one exception to that was Batman #655. Damian’s first canonical appearance hovered in the top 100 comics, though it eventually fell out of favor.
This week, it has come back to life amidst the news that The Flash director Andy Muschietti will step behind the camera for The Brave and the Bold. The announcement has been enough to get Damian’s debut back in the collecting spotlight.
63. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #41 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Sony dropped an R-rated trailer for Kraven the Hunter, and it’s grabbed the attention of Spidey fans everywhere. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s titular character is featured most prominently, as he should, but what has generated plenty of excitement is the Rhino tease.
The last time we saw a version of the character on the silver screen, actor Paul Giamatti was sporting an exaggerated Russian accent and piloting a mech suit. Kraven looks to give us a more comics-accurate depiction. While we don’t get a good look, we do see Rhino’s arm taking on the traditional gray skin.
That has sent buyers straight to eBay on the hunt for his first appearance in ASM #41.
85. INCREDIBLE HULK #449 (NEW TO THE LIST)
With all the talk of Harrison Ford making the transition into Red Hulk during the course of Captain America: Brave New World (formerly New World Order), it’s revived the theory that Thunderbolt Ross will hulk up for The Thunderbolts.
The word on the internet was that after the poor reception of the initial poster, Marvel began making changes to the script. Could it be that Red Hulk will lead the team? Who knows? At least it’s enough to drive sales for the Thunderbolts’ first appearance in Hulk #449.
93. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #51 (NEW TO THE LIST)
After Vincent D’Onofrio teased his Kingpin meeting Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU, collectors have been gunning for those early Wilson Fisk keys.
While ASM #50 is the first on any Kingpin wish list, it’s not the only comic on the list. Here we have Kingpin’s second overall and first cover appearance. That makes it a worthy addition to any Fisk collection you have going.
