What’s the deal with Spawn #306? The Mortal Kombat variant has been earning huge prices, but it’s also at the center of a controversy.

Debates have been raging across social media about a 2020 Spawn #306 variant. The issue has been thrust into the spotlight and not for all the right reasons. As Kenan Thompson famously asks on Saturday Night Live, “What’s up with that?”

29. SPAWN #306 NETHERREALM STUDIOS EDITION (NEW TO THE LIST)

An issue doesn’t get any trendier than this. Published in 2020 for the Final Kombat gaming competition, the issue coincided with the Spawn DLC content for Mortal Kombat 11. According to Key Collector Comics, the infamous pandemic lockdowns forced the organizers to cancel the event, at least to the public.

The controversy centers on the number of copies in circulation. Estimates range anywhere from around 50 copies to over 400. Depending on which figure is correct, the rarity directly impacts the prices for those coveted 9.8s. After a seller listed several copies for sale, some collectors have raised questions about market manipulation. In any case, the Spawn #306 MK variant remains a hot topic of conversation.

32. TMNT: THE LAST RONIN #1 (+6)

The Ninja Turtles are at the summit of the mainstream mountain with Mutant Mayhem. It’s led to speculation about what Nickelodeon has planned for the future, which naturally turns the attention to a popular modern TMNT series.

Set in the future, Last Ronin is the tale of the last surviving Ninja Turtle in a quest for revenge against Shredder’s grandson. While there’s no movie or show just yet, the comic is getting a God of War-style game, and the teaser trailer is keeping Last Ronin #1 on the Hottest Comics.

53. PREDATOR #1 (NEW TO THE LIST)

Just when it seemed the Yautja were on their last collective leg after The Predator, Prey resurrected the franchise. That excitement for the most recent movie rolled into the comics, and fans gobbled up Marvel’s new Predator titles. It brings us to the most anticipated fantasy sci-fi matchups: Predator versus Wolverine.

The limited series is almost here, and the cover art alone is enough to get fans drooling. It’s no surprise that 1989’s Predator #1 has resurfaced on the Hottest Comics as a result.

69. MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #5 (NEW TO THE LIST)

The Marvel movie hype isn’t complete without a rumored Nicolas Cage appearance. There was ample gossip last year that he would return as Johnny Blaze for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When that didn’t pan out, fans didn’t let their hopes die for a Cage return. Instead, the same rumors are tied to Deadpool 3.

There are so many cameos rumored for that movie that it’s hard to take many of them seriously. Be that as it may, the Cage talk is inspiring the recent wave of Ghost Rider collecting.

90. MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #20 (NEW TO THE LIST)

Rounding out this week’s list, we have a new addition to the rankings: Marvel Super-Heroes #20. Fans are crossing their fingers for Doctor Doom to arrive in Fantastic Four, and that has raised the stakes for all the villain’s early appearances.

With prices high for those holy grail-level comics, collectors are turning their attention to Doom’s rare solo adventures.
