One of the single biggest drivers of comic book speculation nowadays is the MCU.  From major characters like Spider-Man all the way down to D-listers like Frog Man, the MCU has fundamentally changed the way people look at comic books.  The goal of this article series is to provide investors of all stripes with some well-reasoned speculation opportunities so they can be one step ahead of a constantly shifting marketplace. So for this issue, let's talk about one of the most interesting characters Marvel has introduced in the last 20 years.  Let's talk about the one, the only Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart!

Invincible Iron Man #1 Young Variant

This book is an amazing one to pick up.  It may seem strange to some, but Skottie Young definitely has his fans and several of his variants have become very popular with collectors.  This particular variant is a really fun, simple piece that naturally puts a smile on your face.

Graded Analysis:  This book has consistently gained value over the years and has a very obvious upward trend line.  That kind of growth certainly will not last indefinitely, but there is no reason to think that will be anytime soon, especially as Skottie Young continues to win plaudits for his talents as a writer, cover artist, and interior artist.  Gotta love triple threats - they give people a lot of different ways to love them.

Invincible Iron Man #7

Invincible Iron Man #7 contains what many (though certainly not everyone) consider to be the first appearance of Riri Williams.  This book skyrocketed in value during the height of COVID-19, but has lost nearly all of those gains since then.  And that is why I think it is a really good investment opportunity.

Graded Analysis: 84% of copies in the CGC census are graded at 9.6 or above, so investors should really only be looking there.  Take a moment to look at the FMV for this book in 9.6 and 9.8 in 2018 and today.  2018 was well before COVID-19 caused major changes in consumer collectible spending and preceded the announcement of the Ironheart tv series by even more.  For both 9.6s and 9.8s, the FMV was much higher than it is today.

To me, that seems like a sign of a massive overcorrection.  Does anyone truly believe that this book is less desirable now that the character has already appeared in the MCU and has a much clearer roadmap to prominence?  Moviegoer's collective embrace of Iron Man alone more than justifies investing in his successor.  And that does not even consider the depth that has been added to the character in recent years, nor the excellent track record of Brian Michael Bendis creations in Marvel films.  A lot of people seem to have written this book off - I do not think you should be one of them.

Note: I am also intrigued by the long-term potential of the third printing.  Unlike other versions, this printing has "First Appearance Of Riri Williams" on the cover.  Given there is some debate around Riri's first appearance, this cover could gain newfound significance.

Ironheart #1 Hans 1:50 Incentive Variant

There are a few things to really love about this book.  First of all, this is the first solo Ironheart book, so it has some character significance.  Second, the book was not heavily printed, so this high-ratio variant is not easy to come by.  Third, this book also features the first appearance of the Ten Rings terrorist organization in the comics.  Given the way Shang Chi ended, that group could take on added significance.

Graded Analysis: This book has followed a generally upward trajectory over its brief existence.
