Today, the market is focused on Marvel Zombies, Riri Williams, and Shang-Chi, making it a perfect time to focus on Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), Falcon (or the new Captain America), and the Winter Soldier.
Many amateur investors chase the shiny balls. In other words, they buy shares when a comic is hot (i.e., a character making their debut on Disney+ or on the big screen) and peaking in value. More experienced investors wait until the FOMO recedes, allow other books to capture the market's attention and then buy the dip.
1. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16: 1st Appearance of Monica Rambeau
When Monica first appeared as an adult in WandaVision about eight months ago, her first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 exploded in value. According to GoCollect, a CGC 9.8 nearly doubled in value in the span of a few weeks in early to mid-January. Notably, while a CGC 9.8 copy of this book has held onto its value over the course of the past eight months, the value of ASM Annual #16 has dropped substantially in most other grades.
For example, since WandaVision debuted, the value of a 9.4 copy has dropped by 29% and the value of a 9.2 has declined by 20%. Those are some big declines and one could argue it's a bear market for this book.
That being said, we know Monica will return in The Marvels in late 2022. As soon as we see Monica make her big-screen debut as Captain Marvel, Photon or Spectrum, I predict this book will regain the value it has lost in recent months. This would be a good time to buy.
2. Captain America #117: 1st Appearance of Falcon
Similar to Monica, short-term investors have already forgotten about Sam Wilson now that The Falcon & The Winter Soldier is in our collective rearview mirror. For instance, since the debut of the show on March 19th, a CGC 8.5 copy of Falcon's first appearance in Captain America #117 has depreciated by nearly 21% across eight sales. In lower grades (3.0 and 3.5), it has lost approximately 25% of its value.
We know Sam will return in a fourth Captain America film and likely play an important role in the MCU going forward. Furthermore, this book is a blue chip Silver Age key and therefore more likely to hold onto its value over the long term. This would be a good time to buy this key while it's experiencing a temporary decline in value.
3. Captain America #6: 1st Appearance of the Winter Soldier
Among the three books I've discussed in this blog, the first appearance of the Winter Soldier in Captain America #6 is the one I'm most unsure about. This book has taken an absolute beating since The Falcon & The Winter Soldier debuted on March 19th. Specifically, a CGC 9.8 copy of this book has lost nearly 31% of its value since mid-March declining from a high sale of $1,200 to $456 in mid-August. In this hot comic book market, finding a cold key like this one is rare.
But, unlike the two other books, I'm less certain this one will rebound. First, this is arguably not a first appearance since Bucky Barnes first appears in Captain America Comics #1 in 1941. Second, unlike Monica and Sam, it's not clear that Bucky will play a major role in the MCU going forward.
