With DCU films and shows coming soon, collectors have been turning their focus to characters who could appear in these productions. Investors are looking at characters whose comic book appearances are poised for a rise in value as a result. With nearly a century of characters to choose from, we’re taking a look at those who should be the focus of your efforts. This time around, the spotlight will be on the exciting breaking casting news for Superman Legacy.

New Characters for the DCU

In breaking news released on Tuesday, July 11, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed to Vanity Fair three new cast members for Superman Legacy and who the actors would be portraying.

Isabela Merced, best known for her starring role as Dora the Explorer, will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi, well-known to superhero movie fans as Darwin in X-Men: First Class, will play Mister Terrific, and, in what can best be termed blockbuster news, Nathan Fillion will be playing Green Lantern Guy Gardner. There have been some immediate reactions in the comics world so let’s break it all down.

Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl Shiera Sanders made her first appearance way back in Flash Comics #1 and her first Silver Age appearance in The Brave and the Bold #34.

Neither have moved since the casting news was released, nor would we expect an immediate reaction. However, both issues are worth watching for potential price increases in the coming weeks.

There were two big gainers based on the news: All-Star Comics #2 from 1999 – the first cameo appearance of Hawkgirl Kendra Saunders, and JSA Secret Files #1 – the first full appearance of Hawkgirl Kendra Saunders. Two copies of each have sold since the casting announce.

There are only five graded copies of All-Star Comics #2 in the CGC census, a number I would expect to increase rapidly. Two of those copies have sold since July 11. A 9.2 copy sold for $35 while a 9.8 sold for $203, setting a record for this book and more than doubling the previous high of $100. Expect the record to be broken again, at least until the census count rises.

There are 126 graded copies of JSA Secret Files #1, a book that has been speculated on since 2016 based on the first full appearance of Stargirl in its pages. The first sale of this book on July 11 was for $145, followed quickly by one for $175.

The sales mark upticks for this book which had previously fallen as low as $129 in May and June. The peak was a slashed $299 paid in February 2022. I would not be shocked to see prices approach or perhaps even pass that peak in the coming weeks.

Mister Terrific

The original Mister Terrific, Terry Sloane, made his first appearance in Sensation Comics #1. Again, there were no sales of this Golden Age mega-key based on the news. However, the first appearance of the modern iteration of Mister Terrific, Michael Holt, in The Spectre #54 made a splash.

A 9.2 sold on July 11 for $105, followed by a huge sale of $1,000 for a 9.8. That’s a 67% increase over the previous sale of a slashed $665 for a 9.8 and an overall record. It will be very interesting to see if that record can be broken.

Guy Gardner

In what comic collectors saw as huge news, the announcement of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner caused sales of the character’s first appearance in Green Lantern #59 to absolutely explode in a frenzy that saw 12 copies of this Silver Age classic sell in less than 48 hours. The high was a 9.2 selling for $1,350. The previous copy sold in the grade was in an April 2022 eBay auction for $1,440.

While there are a fairly plentiful 1,620 graded copies of Green Lantern #59, it isn’t unreasonable to expect that 2022 price to be met and surpassed in the coming weeks. Definitely keep an eye out for upcoming sales of higher grades as well.
